About this book

Compiled by Imam Muhammad ibn Ishaq Ibn Khuzaymah

Imam Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Khuzaymah al-Sulami al-Naysaburi (223-311 AH / 838-923 CE) was born, taught, and died in Nishapur, where he became so renowned for the breadth of his learning that his contemporaries titled him Imam al-A'immah, the Imam of the Imams. His formal work, Mukhtasar al-Mukhtasar min al-Musnad al-Sahih, is often regarded as the most rigorously exacting sahih collection produced after Bukhari and Muslim, predating even Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim, both of whom studied directly under him and carried forward the sahih-focused model he pioneered. What sets the book apart is its chapter headings, which frequently function as compressed legal treatises: Ibn Khuzaymah states the ruling he draws from a hadith, anticipates objections, and reconciles seemingly conflicting narrations before the reader even reaches the text itself, making the collection as much a work of jurisprudence as of hadith transmission. He was also unusually transparent about uncertainty, at times prefacing a report with a conditional phrase such as "if the chain is sound" rather than asserting authenticity outright, a candor rarely matched among compilers of his era. Firmly Shafi'i in law and Athari in creed, he also wrote foundational works defending traditionalist theology. It must be noted honestly that the original work was considerably larger; substantial portions have been lost over the centuries, and what survives, and is presented here across 3,784 hadith, represents only a remnant of his complete Musnad.
