One day they talked about that, and some of them said: They made a bell like the bell of the Christians, and some of them said: Rather, a horn like the horn of the Jews. Omar said: Will you not send a man to call to prayer? Then the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “Get up, O Bilal, and call for prayer.”

سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما بیان کرتے ہیں کہ مسلمان جب مدینہ منورہ آئے تو وہ یونہی جمع ہو جاتے تو نماز کے لئے ایک وقت مقرر کر لیتے، اُنہیں کوئی بُلاتا نہیں تھا، پھر ایک دن اُنہوں نے اس سلسلے میں بات چیت کی تو اُن کے بعض افراد نے کہا کہ عیسائیوں کے گھنٹے جیسا گھنٹا بنالو، جبکہ بعض نے کہا کہ یہودیوں کے نرسنگے جیسا نرسنگا بنالو، سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ تم ایک آدمی کو کیوں نہیں بھیجتے جو نماز کا اعلان کرے؟ تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”اے بلال، اُٹھو نماز کے لئے اعلان کرو۔“

سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے روایت ہے کہ سیدنا بلال رضی اللہ عنہ شروع میں اذان ان کلمات کے ساتھ کہتے تھے۔ «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ» ”میں گواہی دیتا ہوں کہ اللہ کے سوا کوئی حقیقی معبود نہیں ہے“ «حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ» (نماز کے لیے آؤ) تو سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے اُنہیں کہا: «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ» کے بعد «أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهُ» (میں گواہی دیتا ہوں کہ محمد اللہ کے رسول ہیں) کہا کرو، تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”اسی طرح کہا کرو جیسے تمہیں عمر حُکم دے رہے ہیں۔“
