From Yahya ibn al-Ala al-Bajali, from his uncle Shu'ayb ibn Khalid, from Hanzalah ibn Sabrah ibn al-Musayyab, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn Abbas, he said: Fatimah would be mentioned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), but none mentioned her without him turning from him, until they despaired of her. Sa'd ibn Mu'adh met Ali, saying: By Allah, I see the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) withholds her only for you. He said: Ali said to him: Why see you that? He said: By Allah, I am not one of two men: I am neither a worldly man seeking what is with me - he knew my property, neither yellow nor white - nor a disbeliever he conciliates with her from his religion, meaning he conciliates him with her. I am the first to embrace Islam. Sa'd said: I adjure you to relieve it from me, for in that is relief. He said: What shall I say? He said: Say: I come proposing to Allah and to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) Fatimah bint Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He said: Ali went, عرضing to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while he prayed, confined in supererogatory prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: It is as though you have a need, O Ali? He said: Yes; I come proposing to Allah and His Messenger Fatimah daughter of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Welcome, a weak word. Then Ali returned to Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, who said to him: What did you do? He said: I did what you ordered me; he added only to welcome me with a weak word. Sa'd said: He married you, by Him Who sent him with truth. There is no refusal now, no lie with him. I adjure you to come to him tomorrow, saying: O Prophet of Allah, when will you wed me? Ali said: This is harder than the first. Shall I not say: O Messenger of Allah, my need? He said: Say as I ordered you. Ali went, saying: O Messenger of Allah, when will you wed me? He said: The third, Allah willing. Then he called Bilal, saying: O Bilal, I married my daughter to my cousin. I love it be of my nation's sunnah to feed food at marriage. Go to the sheep, taking a ewe and four or five mudds, making me a bowl, that I may gather thereon Emigrants and Ansar. When you finish it, inform me of it. He went, doing what he ordered, then bringing him a bowl, placing it before him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) pierced its top, then saying: Bring people in groups, leaving no group to another - meaning when a group finished, another would not return. People began coming, whenever a group finished another came, until people finished. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went to its remainder, spitting therein, blessing. He said: O Bilal, carry it to your mothers, telling them: Eat and feed whoever visits you. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) arose, entering upon the women, saying: I married my daughter to my cousin. You knew her station with me. I am handing her to him now, Allah willing. Take your daughter. The women arose, perfuming her of their perfume and jewelry. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered; when the women saw him they went, between them and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) a curtain. Asma bint Umays stayed. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to her: Gently, who are you? She said: I am who guarded your daughter, for a girl on the night she is wed needs a woman near her; if a need عرضت her, or she wants something, she confides that to her. He said: I ask my God to guard you before you, behind you, right of you, left of you, from accursed Satan. Then he called Fatimah, who came. When she saw Ali sitting beside the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), she was shy and wept. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) feared her weeping was because Ali had no property. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: What makes you weep? I spared you not in myself; I sought for you my best family. By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, I married you him happy in this world; in the Hereafter he is of the righteous. He made her adhere. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Bring me the washtub, filling it water. Asma brought the washtub, filling it water. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) rinsed therein, washing therein his feet and face. Then he called Fatimah, taking a handful of water, striking therewith upon her head, a handful between her breasts. Then he sprinkled his skin and her skin. Then he embraced her, saying: O Allah, she is of me and I of her. O Allah, You removed impurity from me, purifying me; purify her. Then he called for another washtub. Then he called Ali, doing with him as he did with her, praying for him as he prayed for her. Then he said: Now arise to your house. Allah join you, bless your secret, set right your state. Then he arose, closing upon them his door with his hand. Ibn Abbas said: Asma bint Umays told me she watched the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him); he kept praying for them exclusively, associating none in his prayer for them, until he vanished in his chambers.
