About this book

Compiled by Imam Abd al-Razzaq al-San'ani

Musannaf 'Abd al-Razzaq is one of the earliest surviving comprehensive collections of hadith and legal reports (athar) in Islamic history, compiled by Imam Abu Bakr Abd al-Razzaq ibn Hammam al-Himyari al-San'ani (126-211 AH / 743-827 CE) of Sanaa, Yemen. Predating the Six Books by decades, it preserves material transmitted mainly through his three principal teachers, Ma'mar ibn Rashid, Ibn Jurayj, and Sufyan al-Thawri, whose earlier written collections he gathered and arranged topically by legal chapter, beginning with Purification and continuing through prayer, zakat, fasting, pilgrimage, trade, marriage, and inheritance. The printed work contains between 18,700 and 22,000 reports, the exact count varying by edition and by whether the appended Kitab al-Jami is included. Because it draws directly on written sources only one generation removed from the Prophet's Companions and Successors, its chains of transmission are unusually short, and it stands alongside Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah as one of the two great surviving witnesses to hadith and legal literature before the crystallization of the classical Sunni schools of law. Ahmad ibn Hanbal praised Abd al-Razzaq as the most learned man of his era in hadith, though hadith critics note that narrations he transmitted purely from memory after losing his eyesight in old age are treated with somewhat more caution than those he read directly from his own book. Lost for centuries, the Musannaf was rediscovered and published in the twentieth century, and has since become an essential primary source for scholars researching the earliest stratum of Islamic legal and prophetic tradition.
