From Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, in his hadith, from Urwah, he said: When the Muslims grew many and faith prevailed, the idolatrous disbelievers of Quraysh spoke of those of their tribes who believed, tormenting and imprisoning them, wanting to turn them from their religion. He said: When it reached us that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to those who believed in him: Disperse in the land, they said: Where shall we go, O Messenger of Allah? He said: Here, pointing with his hand toward Abyssinia's land, the dearest land to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to emigrate toward. So people emigrated in number, some with their families, some alone, until they reached Abyssinia. Al-Zuhri said: Ja'far ibn Abi Talib went out in the emigration with his wife Asma bint Umays al-Khath'amiyyah, and Uthman ibn Affan, may Allah have mercy on him, with his wife Ruqayyah daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Khalid ibn Sa'id ibn al-As went out with his wife Umaymah bint Khalaf. Abu Salamah went out with his wife Umm Salamah bint Abi Umayyah ibn al-Mughirah. A man of Quraysh went out with their women. Abdullah ibn Ja'far was born there, and Amah daughter of Khalid ibn Sa'id, mother of Amr ibn al-Zubayr and Khalid ibn al-Zubayr, was born there, and al-Harith ibn Hatib among Quraysh born there. Al-Zuhri said: Urwah ibn al-Zubayr informed me that Aishah said: I never knew my parents but as professing the religion. No day passed us without the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) coming to us at both ends of the day, morning and evening. When the Muslims were tried, Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, went out emigrating toward Abyssinia until at Bark al-Ghimad he met Ibn al-Daghinah, chief of al-Qarah. Ibn al-Daghinah said: Where do you intend, O Abu Bakr? Abu Bakr said: My people expelled me; I wish to wander the earth worshipping my Lord. Ibn al-Daghinah said: One like you, O Abu Bakr, is neither expelled nor goes out. You earn for the destitute, uphold kinship, bear the burdened, honor the guest, and aid in calamities of truth. I am your protector; return and worship your Lord in your land. So Ibn al-Daghinah departed, returning with Abu Bakr, and toured Quraysh's disbelievers, saying: Abu Bakr went out, and one like him does not go out. Would you expel a man who earns for the destitute, upholds kinship, bears the burdened, honors the guest, and aids in calamities of truth? Quraysh honored Ibn al-Daghinah's protection, securing Abu Bakr, telling Ibn al-Daghinah: Order Abu Bakr to worship his Lord in his house, praying therein as he wishes, neither harming us nor proclaiming prayer and recitation outside his house. He did so. Then it occurred to Abu Bakr to build a mosque in his house's courtyard, praying and reciting therein. The idolaters' women and children crowded over him, marveling and watching. Abu Bakr was a weeping man, unable to hold his tears when reciting the Qur'an. That alarmed Quraysh's nobles, who sent to Ibn al-Daghinah. He came to them, and they said: We only protected Abu Bakr to worship Allah in his house; he has exceeded that, building a mosque in his courtyard, proclaiming prayer and recitation. We feared he would seduce our women and children. Go to him; order him: if he loves to confine himself to worshipping Allah in his house, let him; if he refuses but to proclaim that, ask him to return your protection to you, for we dislike betraying you and do not approve Abu Bakr's proclamation. Aishah said: Ibn al-Daghinah came to Abu Bakr and said: O Abu Bakr, you know what I contracted for you: either confine yourself to that, or return my protection to me, for I dislike Arabs hearing I was betrayed in a man's covenant I contracted. Abu Bakr said: I return your protection to you, content with Allah and His Messenger's protection. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was in Makkah that day. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to the Muslims: I have been shown your emigration land; I was shown a salty land with palms between two lava-fields, the two Harrahs. Whoever emigrated emigrated toward Madinah when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentioned that. Some Muslims who had emigrated to Abyssinia returned to Madinah. Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, prepared to emigrate. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Wait, for I hope permission is given me. Abu Bakr said: Do you hope that, O Prophet of Allah? He said: Yes. So Abu Bakr held himself back for the Messenger of Allah's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) company, feeding two riding camels he had with acacia leaves for four months. Al-Zuhri said: Urwah said: Aishah said: While we sat one day in our house at midday, one said to Abu Bakr: Here is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) coming, his head covered, at an hour he never came to us. Abu Bakr said: May my father and mother be ransom for him; he comes at this hour only for a matter. She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came, asked permission, and was admitted. Abu Bakr said: They are only your family, may my father be ransom for you, O Messenger of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Permission has been given me to go out. Abu Bakr said: Companionship, may my father be ransom for you, O Messenger of Allah? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Yes. Abu Bakr said: Take, may my father and mother be ransom for you, O Messenger of Allah, one of these two riding camels of mine. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: For the price. Aishah said: We equipped them most swiftly, preparing travel food in a bag. Asma bint Abi Bakr cut part of her girdle and tied the bag with it; for that she was called Dhat al-Nitaqayn. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Abu Bakr reached a cave in a mountain called Thawr, staying three nights. Ma'mar said: Uthman al-Jazari informed me that Miqsam the freedman of Ibn Abbas informed him concerning His saying: And when the disbelievers plotted against you to confine you. He said: Quraysh consulted at Makkah. Some said: In the morning confine him in bonds, meaning the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Some said: Rather kill him. Some said: Expel him. Allah informed His Prophet of that. Ali slept upon the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) bed that night, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out until he reached the cave. The idolaters spent the night guarding Ali, thinking him the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). In the morning they rose against him; seeing Ali, Allah foiled their plot. They said: Where is this companion of yours? He said: I know not. They tracked him; reaching the mountain, the matter confused them. They climbed the mountain, passing the cave, seeing a spider's web upon its door. They said: Had he entered here, no spider's web would be upon its door. He stayed therein three nights. Ma'mar said: Qatadah said: They entered Dar al-Nadwah plotting against the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), saying: Let none enter with you not of you. Satan entered with them in the form of a Najdi elder. Some said: You have no watcher from this one; this is a man of Najd. He said: They consulted. A man among them said: I see you mount him upon a camel and expel him. Satan said: Evil is this one's view; here he corrupted between you while among you, so how when you expel him and he corrupts people, then brings them against you to fight you? They said: Excellent is this elder's view. Another said: I see you put him in a house, mudding its door, leaving him therein until he dies. Satan said: Evil is this one's view; do you think his people would ever leave him therein? They must rage for him and release him. Abu Jahl said: I see you take from each tribe a man, then take their swords and strike him one blow, none knowing who killed him, then pay blood-money. Satan said: Excellent is this one's view. Allah informed His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) of that. He and Abu Bakr went out to a cave in a mountain called Thawr, while Ali slept upon the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) bed. They spent the night guarding him, thinking him the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). In the morning Ali arose for dawn prayer, and they rushed to him; there was Ali. They said: Where is your companion? He said: I know not. They tracked him until they reached the cave, then returned. He and Abu Bakr stayed therein three nights. Ma'mar said: Al-Zuhri said in his hadith from Urwah: They stayed therein three nights; Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr, a clever perceptive youth, would spend the night with them, leaving them at dawn to be with Quraysh in Makkah as though overnight there, hearing no plot against them without retaining it until bringing them its news when darkness mingled. Amir ibn Fuhayrah, Abu Bakr's freedman, would pasture a milch ewe, bringing it to them when part of the night passed; they would spend the night in its milk until Amir ibn Fuhayrah called it away at dawn. He did that each of the three nights. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Abu Bakr hired a man of Banu al-Dil of Banu Abd ibn Adi, a skilled guide - al-khirrit is the expert in guidance - who had dipped his oath in Al al-As ibn Wail's alliance, upon Quraysh disbelievers' religion. They trusted him, handing him their riding camels, promising him Thawr's cave after three nights. He came to their cave with their camels on the morning of three nights. They departed with Amir ibn Fuhayrah, Abu Bakr's freedman, and the Dili guide. He took them by the Adhakhir road, the coastal road. Ma'mar said: Al-Zuhri said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Malik al-Mudliji informed me - the nephew of Suraqah ibn Ju'shum - that his father informed him he heard Suraqah say: Messengers of Quraysh disbelievers came to us offering for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Abu Bakr the blood-money of each for whoever killed or captured them. He said: While I sat in a gathering of my people of Banu Mudlij, a man among them came until he stood over us and said: O Suraqah, I just saw dark shapes by the coast, I think Muhammad and his companions. Suraqah said: I knew they were they, but said: They are not they; you saw so-and-so and so-and-so gone seeking strays. He said: I stayed in the gathering only an hour until I arose, entered my house, ordered my maid to bring my horse behind a hill, keeping it for me. I took my spear, leaving by the house's back, trailing its butt upon the ground, lowering the spear, until I reached my horse and mounted. I urged it trotting until I saw their dark shapes. When I drew near where sound is heard, my horse stumbled and I fell. I arose, reaching to my quiver, drawing divining arrows to cast whether to harm them or not. Out came what I hate: not to harm them. So I mounted my horse, disobeying the arrows, urging it trotting again until I drew near, hearing the Messenger of Allah's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recitation - he not turning, Abu Bakr much turning - when my horse's forelegs sank into the earth up to the knees. I fell from her, urged her, and she rose, her forelegs hardly emerging. When she stood upright, at her forelegs' trace was dust rising in the sky like smoke. Ma'mar said: I said to Abu Amr ibn al-Ala: What is al-uthan? He was silent a while, then said: It is smoke without fire. Ma'mar said: Al-Zuhri said in his hadith: I cast the divining arrows, and out came what I hate: not to harm them. I called to them for safety, and they halted. I mounted my horse until I reached them. It had entered my soul, from what befell me of being held from them, that the Messenger of Allah's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) affair would prevail. I said to him: Your people offered blood-money for you. I told them of my journey's news and what people intended for them. I offered them provision and goods, but they took nothing from me, asking only to conceal us. I asked him to write me a covenant of truce for my safety. He ordered Amir ibn Fuhayrah, who wrote it for me on a leather piece. Then he went on. Ma'mar said: Al-Zuhri said: Urwah ibn al-Zubayr informed me that he met al-Zubayr and a party of Muslims, Madinah merchants in Syria returning to Makkah, who offered the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Abu Bakr white garments; it is said they clothed them, giving them. The Muslims in Madinah heard of the Messenger of Allah's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) departure, going out each morning to the Harrah awaiting him until midday heat harmed them. One day after long waiting they turned to their houses, when a Jew atop one of their forts, looking for a matter, saw the Messenger of Allah and his companions in white, the mirage shifting with them. The Jew could not but call at his highest voice: O Arabs, this is your fortune you await. The Muslims rushed to arms, meeting the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) until they reached him at the Harrah's outskirts. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned them rightward until he halted at Banu Amr ibn Awf, that Monday of Rabi' al-Awwal. Abu Bakr would remind people, while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sat silent. Ansar newcomers who had never seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mistook him for Abu Bakr, until the sun struck the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Abu Bakr came shading him with his cloak, and people knew the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) then. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stayed at Banu Amr ibn Awf over ten nights, building the mosque founded upon piety, praying therein. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mounted his riding camel, marching with people until it knelt at the Messenger's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mosque in Madinah, where Muslim men prayed that day. It was a drying place for dates of Sahl and Suhayl, two orphan brother boys under Abu Umamah As'ad ibn Zurarah of Banu al-Najjar's care. When his riding camel knelt, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: This is the dwelling, Allah willing. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called the two boys, bargaining for the drying place to make it a mosque. They said: Rather we grant it you, O Messenger of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) refused to accept it as gift until he bought it from them, building it a mosque. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) began carrying bricks with them in his garments, saying: This carrying is not Khaybar's carrying; this is more dutiful, our Lord, and purer. And saying: O Allah, reward is the Hereafter's reward, so mercy upon the Ansar and Emigrants. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would recite verses of an unnamed Muslim man; it never reached me in hadiths that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ever recited a complete verse of poetry except these lines, but he would chant them for the mosque's building. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fought Quraysh's disbelievers, war barred Abyssinia's emigrants from coming to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) until they met him in Madinah at the Trench's time. Asma bint Umays used to narrate that Umar ibn al-Khattab would taunt them for staying in Abyssinia. Asma mentioned that, she claimed, to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who said: You are not so. The first verse sent down concerning fighting was: Permission is given to those fought because they were wronged, and Allah over aiding them is Powerful.
