From Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, he said: The first that is mentioned of Abd al-Muttalib, the grandfather of the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), is that Quraysh left the Sanctuary fleeing from the companions of the Elephant, while he was a young lad. He said: By Allah, I shall not leave the Sanctuary of Allah seeking honor elsewhere. So he sat by the House, and Quraysh departed from him. He said: O Allah, a man defends his baggage, so defend Your baggage; let not their cross and their might overcome Your might tomorrow. He remained firm until Allah, blessed and exalted, destroyed the Elephant and its companions. Quraysh returned, and he had grown great among them for his endurance and his honoring of the sacred things of Allah. While he was in that state, his eldest son was born to him and grew up, and he is al-Harith ibn Abd al-Muttalib. Abd al-Muttalib was visited in a dream and told: Dig Zamzam, the hidden treasure of the greatest elder. He woke and said: O Allah, make it clear to me. Then he was shown again in a dream: Dig Zamzam, concealed between dung and blood, at the raven's pecking place, in the ant village, facing the red idols. So Abd al-Muttalib arose and walked until he sat in the Sacred Mosque watching for the signs hidden for him. A cow was slaughtered at al-Hazurah, and it escaped its slaughterer with its last breath until death overcame it in the Mosque at the site of Zamzam. That cow was butchered in its place until its meat was carried away. Then a raven came swooping down until it landed in the dung and pecked in the ant village. So Abd al-Muttalib stood digging there. Quraysh came and said to Abd al-Muttalib: What is this deed? We never thought you ignorant; why do you dig in our mosque? Abd al-Muttalib said: I shall surely dig this well and strive against whoever bars me from it. He and his son al-Harith began digging, and he had no child that day besides him. Men of Quraysh pressed upon them, disputing and fighting them, while others of Quraysh held people back from them for what they knew of his noble lineage, his truthfulness, and his striving in his religion that day. When digging became possible for him and harm intensified against him, he vowed that if he were granted ten sons he would sacrifice one of them. Then he dug until he reached swords buried in Zamzam. When Quraysh saw he had reached the swords, they said to Abd al-Muttalib: Give us a share of what you found. Abd al-Muttalib said: Rather these swords belong to the House of Allah. Then he dug until he reached water, digging it deep, then widened it so it would not run dry. Then he built a basin over it, and he and his son would draw and fill that basin, and the pilgrims would drink from it. Men of envious Quraysh would break it at night, and Abd al-Muttalib would repair it in the morning. When they broke it often, Abd al-Muttalib prayed to his Lord, and he was shown in a dream and told: Say: O Allah, I do not permit it for one who washes, but it is lawful and permitted drink for the drinker. Then he was sufficed against them. Abd al-Muttalib stood when Quraysh had gathered at the Mosque and proclaimed what he had been shown, then departed. No one of Quraysh spoiled his basin thereafter without being struck with an ailment in his body, until they left him his basin and his watering. Then Abd al-Muttalib married women and ten men were born to him. He said: O Allah, I had vowed to You the sacrifice of one of them, and I shall cast lots among them, so strike with it whomever You wish. He cast lots among them, and the lot fell upon Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, who was the dearest of his sons to him. He said: O Allah, is he dearer to You, or a hundred camels? Then he cast lots between him and a hundred camels, and the lot fell upon the hundred camels. So Abd al-Muttalib slaughtered them in place of Abdullah. Abdullah was the handsomest man ever seen in Quraysh. One day he went out before women of Quraysh gathered together, and a woman among them said: O women of Quraysh, which of you will this youth marry ... the light between his eyes. And there was a light between his eyes. So Aminah bint Wahb ibn Abd Manaf ibn Zuhrah married him, and he consummated with her, and she conceived the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then Abd al-Muttalib sent Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib to fetch dates for him from Yathrib, and Abdullah died there. Aminah gave birth to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he was in the care of Abd al-Muttalib. He sought a wet-nurse for him, a woman of Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr. The one nursing him took him down to the market of Ukaz, where a soothsayer saw him and said: O people of Ukaz, kill this boy, for he shall have a kingdom. His nursing mother took fright with him, and Allah saved him. Then he grew up with her, until he could walk, with his foster sister watching over him. His sister through his nursing mother came and said: O my mother, I saw a company seize my brother just now and split open his belly. His nursing mother arose in alarm until she reached him, and there he was sitting, his color changed, with no one near him. So she departed with him until she brought him to his mother, and said to her: Take your son from me, for I have feared for him. His mother said: No, by Allah, there is nothing wrong with my son that you fear. I saw while he was in my belly that a light came out of me by which the palaces of Syria were lit. And I bore him, and when I bore him he fell leaning upon his hands, raising his head to the sky. His mother and his grandfather Abd al-Muttalib took charge of him after weaning. Then his mother died, and he remained in the care of his grandfather. As a boy he would come to his grandfather's cushion and sit on it; his grandfather would come out, having grown old, and the maid leading him would say: Get down from your grandfather's cushion. Abd al-Muttalib would say: Leave my son, for he is destined for good. Then his grandfather died while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was a boy, and Abu Talib took him in, the full brother of Abdullah. When he neared puberty, Abu Talib journeyed with him trading toward Syria. When they halted at Tayma, a Jewish rabbi of Tayma saw him and said to Abu Talib: What is this boy to you? He said: He is my brother's son. He said: Are you tender toward him? He said: Yes. He said: By Allah, if you go forth with him to Syria you will never return with him to your family; they will surely kill him, for he is their enemy. So Abu Talib returned from Tayma to Makkah. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reached puberty, a woman perfumed the Ka'bah with incense, and a spark flew from her censer into the Ka'bah's garments and burned them, weakening it. Quraysh consulted about demolishing it, fearing to demolish it. Al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah said to them: What do you intend by demolishing it, repair or harm? They said: Rather repair. He said: Allah does not destroy the reformers. They said: Who will climb it and demolish it? Al-Walid said: I shall climb it and demolish it. Al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah climbed onto the back of the House with an axe and said: O Allah, we intend only repair. Then he demolished. When Quraysh saw that he had demolished part of it and no punishment they feared befell them, they demolished with him. When they rebuilt it and reached the place of the Corner, Quraysh disputed over the Corner, which tribe would lift it, until they nearly came to blows. They said: Come, let us appoint as judge the first who comes upon us from this lane. They agreed on that, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came upon them, a youth wearing a striped اليمني cloak. They appointed him judge. He ordered the Corner placed in a cloth, then ordered the chief of each tribe and gave him a side of the cloth, then he climbed and they raised the Corner to him, and he himself placed it. He only grew in their pleasure with the passing years, until they called him the Trustworthy before revelation came down to him. They would hardly slaughter a she-camel for sale without bringing it to him to pray for blessing in it for them. When he matured and reached his prime, having little wealth, Khadijah bint Khuwaylid hired him to the market of Hubashah, a market in Tihamah, hiring another man of Quraysh with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), speaking of her, said: I never saw a better employer than Khadijah; whenever my companion and I returned we found with her a delicacy of food she had hidden for us. He said: When we returned from the market of Hubashah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: I said to my companion: Come, let us visit Khadijah. So we came to her, and while we were with her there entered upon us an adolescent girl of Quraysh's household slaves, and al-muntashiyah is the nubile one who desires men. She said: Is this Muhammad? By Him by Whom oaths are sworn, if he has come as a suitor. I said: No. When my companion and I went out, he said: Are you shy of Khadijah's proposal? By Allah, there is no Qurayshi woman but considers you her equal. So I returned to her another time, and that adolescent girl entered upon us and said: Is this Muhammad? By Him by Whom oaths are sworn, if he has come as a suitor. I said shyly: Yes. Khadijah and her sister did not refuse us. She went to her father Khuwaylid ibn Asad while he was drunk with drink, and said: This is your brother's son Muhammad ibn Abdullah proposing to Khadijah, and Khadijah is pleased. He called him and asked him about that, and he proposed to him and married him (to her). He said: Khadijah perfumed (the groom) and dressed him in a robe. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) consummated with her. In the morning the old man sobered from his drunkenness and said: What is this perfume and this robe? Khadijah's sister said: This is a robe your brother's son Muhammad ibn Abdullah has dressed you in; he married Khadijah to him and has consummated with her. The old man objected, then accepted until that settled, feeling shy. Poets of Quraysh declaimed: Do not turn away, Khadij, from Muhammad, a skin shining like the light of al-Farqad. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) remained with Khadijah until she bore him some of his daughters, and he had by her al-Qasim. Some scholars claimed she bore him another boy called al-Tahir. He said: And some said: We know she bore him only al-Qasim, and she bore him his four daughters: Zaynab, Fatimah, Ruqayyah, and Umm Kulthum. After she bore him some of his daughters, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) began to devote himself, and solitude was made beloved to him.
