From Ibn Jurayj, he said: when the people of Sham were in the first army, the army of al-Husayn ibn Numayr, a man burned from near the door of Banu Jumah, while the mosque that day was full of tents and buildings. The fire spread till it burned the House, burning all upon it, till a bird alighting upon it scattered its stones. Ibn Jurayj said: a Qurashi man called Muhammad ibn al-Murtafi' said to me: by Allah, as we prayed one night Isha behind Ibn al-Zubayr, I saw in the belly of the House — and we saw through the gap of the door. When Ibn al-Zubayr finished, he said: did you see? We said: yes. He said: Ibn al-Zubayr resolved to demolish and build it. He sent to me so-and-so camels carrying wars dye from Yemen — he mentioned four thousand camels — and something he named, wanting to make it mortar for the House. Then he was told wars rots and crumbles, so he distributed the wars among the women and seated women of Quraysh, and built with gypsum. When he prepared his need, Ibn Abbas sent to him: if thou doest, do not leave people with no qibla; place poles on its corners, and place curtains upon them, that people pray to them. He did so, until on Sunday he ascended the minbar, then said: O people, what deem ye of demolishing the House? None differed with him. They said: we deem thou not demolish it. He was silent with them, until when their opinion waned, he said: one of you keeps stopping his fundament upon his head, while you see a bird alight upon it scattering its stones. Lo, I shall demolish tomorrow. That coincided with the funeral of a man of Banu Bakr, which those who would follow it followed and those who would not. A cushion was broken for him at the Maqam. Then men mounted it from behind the curtains. The people finished their funeral; one going to Mina, one going to the well of Maymun, deeming only that a blast from heaven would strike them. When the people came, it was said: enter, for by Allah he demolished. The people entered. He dug till he demolished it down to a foundation in the Hijr — and it held together, inseparable. He called the elders of Quraysh and showed them it. Ibn Muti' took the crowbar from the side of the foundation toward the house of Banu Humayd, and shook it all, entire. Then he built it till he named it, making for it two doors flush with the ground, eastern and western; people enter from this door and exit from this. He built it. When he finished building it, there was in the mosque a great pit, rubble and trespass. The people returned to the valley bed; a man would lay a hundred laden valley camels of it, till a man went out in his suit and shirt to Dhu Tuwa, bringing in the edge of his cloak gravel, seeking good therein, until when the people tired, he took to feeding it, laying gravel till it leveled. He said: O people, I deem ye perform Umra from al-Tan'im walking; whoever is rich, a camel he sacrifices, else a cow, else a sheep. He said: I recalled the Day of Resurrection from the multitude of people; the earth, plain and mountain, crept with people, great and small, virgins, previously married, women, and the shaven. He said: we came to the House, circumambulated with him, ran between al-Safa and al-Marwa, then sacrificed and slaughtered. I never saw heads, trotters and forearms in a place more than that day.
