From Ma'mar, from Ayyub, and Kathir ibn Kathir ibn al-Muttalib ibn Abi Wada'a, one adding to the other, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, he said: ask me, O company of youth, for I am about to depart from among you. The people asked him much. A man said to him: may Allah set you right, what of the Maqam — is it as we used to say? He said: what did you say? He said: we used to say that when Ibrahim, peace be upon him, came, the mother of Isma'il offered him lodging, and he refused, and she brought this stone. He said: it is not so. Sa'id said: Ibn Abbas said: the first thing women took, the waist-wrap, was from the mother of Isma'il; she took a waist-wrap to efface her trace from Sara. Then Ibrahim brought her and her son Isma'il, while she nursed him, until he placed them at the House, at a lote-tree above Zamzam in the upper part of the mosque. There was no one in Makkah that day, nor water in it. He placed them there, and placed with them a bag with dates and a waterskin with water. Then Ibrahim turned to depart. The mother of Isma'il followed him and said: O Ibrahim, where are you going, leaving us in this place with no human nor anything? She said that to him repeatedly, and he did not turn to her. She said to him: did Allah command you with this? He said: yes. She said: then He will not let us perish. Then she returned. Ibrahim, peace be upon him, went on until at the pass, where they could not see him, he faced the House with his face, then supplicated with these supplications: Our Lord, I have settled of my offspring in a valley without crops, at Thy Sacred House, that they may give thanks. The mother of Isma'il nursed Isma'il and drank of that water, until when what was in the waterskin ran out, she thirsted and her son thirsted. She looked at him writhing — or he said: struggling — and she went, disliking to look at him. She found al-Safa the nearest mountain to her, stood upon it, then faced the valley looking if she saw anyone, and she saw no one. She descended from al-Safa until when she reached the valley, she raised the edge of her shift and hastened as an exhausted man hastens until she crossed the valley. Then she came to al-Marwa, stood upon it, and looked if she saw anyone, and she saw no one. She did that seven times. Ibn Abbas said: the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: hence people run between them. When she looked down upon al-Marwa, she heard a sound. She said: hush — meaning to herself. Then she listened, and heard again. Then she said: Thou hast made me hear; if Thou hast aid... And there was the angel at the site of Zamzam, digging with his heel — or he said: with his wing — until water appeared. She began to dam it thus, saying with her hand, and scooped water into her waterskin, and it gushed as much as she scooped. Ibn Abbas said: the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: may Allah have mercy on the mother of Isma'il; had she left Zamzam — or he said: had she not scooped of the water — Zamzam would have been a flowing spring. He said: she drank and nursed her child. The angel said to her: fear no perishing, for here is the House of Allah; this boy and his father shall build it, and Allah does not let His people perish. The House was raised above the ground like a hill; torrents came, taking to its right and left. They remained thus until a party of Jurhum — or a household of Jurhum — passed by them, coming from the way of Kida. They alighted at lower Makkah and saw a circling bird. They said: this bird circles over water; our covenant with this valley is with no water in it. They sent one or two scouts, and they found the water. They returned and told them of the water, while the mother of Isma'il, peace be upon her, was at the water. They said: wilt thou permit us to alight by thee? She said: yes, but you have no right to the water. They said: yes. Ibn Abbas said: the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: the mother of Isma'il found that, loving company. They alighted and sent to their families, and they alighted with them, until there were households of them there. The boy grew and learned Arabic from them, and pleased them when he grew. When he came of age they married him a woman of them. The mother of Isma'il died. Ibrahim came after Isma'il had married, to look after his legacy, but did not find Isma'il. He asked his wife about him. She said: he went out seeking for us. Then he asked about their condition, their livelihood. She said: we are in evil, in straitness and hardship, and she complained to him. He said: when your husband comes, convey to him peace, and say to him: change the threshold of thy door. When Isma'il came, it was as if he sensed something. He said: did anyone come to you? She said: yes, an old man so-and-so came to us, asked us about you, and I told him; he asked us about our livelihood, and I told him we are in hardship and strain. He said: did he enjoin anything upon thee? She said: yes, he ordered me to convey peace to thee, and says: change the threshold of thy door. He said: that was my father, and he ordered me to part from thee; join thy family. So he divorced her. Then he married another. Ibrahim stayed from them as Allah willed, then came to them after that, but did not find him. He entered upon his wife and asked about him. She said: he went out seeking for us. He said: how are you? He asked her about their livelihood and condition. She said: well, we are in plenty, and she praised Allah. He said: what is your food? She said: meat. He said: what is your drink? She said: water. He said: O Allah, bless them in meat and water. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said that day: there was no grain; had they grain he would have supplicated for them in it. He said: none is alone with them outside Makkah but they did not suit him. He said: when your husband comes, convey to him peace from me, and order him to keep firm the threshold of his door. When Isma'il came, he said: did anyone come to thee? She said: yes, a comely old man came to us, and she praised him; he asked me about thee and I told him; he asked me about our livelihood, and I said: we are well. He said: did he enjoin anything upon thee? She said: he conveys peace to thee, and says to thee: keep firm the threshold of thy house. He said: that was my father, and thou art the threshold; he ordered me to keep thee. Then he stayed from them as Allah willed, then came after that, while Isma'il sharpened arrows of his beneath a lote-tree near Zamzam. When he saw him he rose, and they did as father does with son. Then he said: O Isma'il, Allah commands me to build a house here. He pointed to a mound raised above what is around it, which the torrent comes from its sides but does not rise over it. They stood digging out the foundations; thereupon he raised the foundations of the House. Ibrahim brought stones and Isma'il built, until when the building rose, he brought this stone and placed it for him, and he stood upon it while building, with Isma'il handing to him, both saying: Our Lord, accept from us; Thou art the Hearing, the Knowing. They built until they went round the House, both saying: Our Lord, accept from us; Thou art the Hearing, the Knowing. Ma'mar said: I heard a man say: Ibrahim came to them upon the Buraq. He said: I heard another man say: they wept when they met until the birds answered them. Ma'mar said: Umar ibn al-Khattab said to Quraysh: the guardians of this House before you were Tasm; they slighted it and did not magnify its sanctity, so Allah destroyed them. Then after them Jurhum held it; they slighted it and did not magnify its sanctity, so Allah destroyed them. So do not slight it, and magnify its sanctity.
