I am Ali bin Khashram, I am Isa, on the authority of Al-Amash, on the authority of Ibrahim, on the authority of Alqamah, on the authority of Abdullah, he said: I was walking with the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace. He greeted a man in Harith in Medina while leaning on Asib. He passed by a group of Jews, and some of them said: If you ask him, and some of them said: No. You ask him and he makes you hear what you dislike. So they stood up to him and said: O Abu al-Qasim, tell us about the soul. So he stood up for an hour and raised his head. So we knew that it was being revealed to him, until the revelation came, then he said: “The spirit is from the command of my Lord, and you have not been given of knowledge except a little.” (Peace Be Upon Him)

Ya'qub bin Ibrahim, narrated to us by Hushaym, I am Abu Bishr, informed us on the authority of Sa'id bin Jubayr, on the authority of Ibn Abbas, in the words of the Almighty: And do not recite your prayer loudly, and do not recite it silently. He said: It was revealed while the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, was hidden in Mecca. Whenever he prayed with his companions He raised his voice while reciting, so when the polytheists heard it, they cursed the Qur’an, and whoever sent it down, and whoever brought it, and he said to his Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him. And peace be upon him: And do not recite your prayers out loud, that is, with your recitation, lest the polytheists hear and curse the Qur’an, and do not frighten your companions with it, lest they listen. And seek a way between that.” (Peace Be Upon Him)

I am Ibrahim ibn al-Mustamir, narrated to us al-Salt ibn Muhammad, narrated to us Maslamah ibn Alqamah, from Dawud ibn Abi Hind, from Abdullah ibn Ubayd, from Said ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who said: "Musa stood as an address among the Children of Israel and delivered an eloquent sermon. It occurred to him that no one had been given the knowledge that he had been given. Allah knew what he had whispered to himself concerning that. He said to him: O Musa, among My servants there are those to whom I have given knowledge that I have not given you. He said: My Lord, who among Your servants? He said: Yes. He said: Then guide me to this man to whom You have given knowledge that You have not given me, so that I may learn from him. He said: Some of your provision will guide you to him. He said to his young companion Yusha: 'I will not cease until I reach the junction of the two seas, or I will continue for ages' (Quran 18:60). Among their provisions was a salted fish in a basket, and they would eat from it in the evening and the morning. When they reached the rock by the seashore, the young man placed the basket on the seashore. The fish came into contact with the moisture of the sea and moved in the basket, overturning it, and slipped into the sea. 'When they had passed beyond' (Quran 18:62), the morning meal was due, and he said: 'Give us our morning meal; we have certainly suffered from this journey of ours much fatigue' (Quran 18:62). The young man recalled and said: 'Do you remember when we betook ourselves to the rock? Indeed, I forgot the fish, and none made me forget it except Satan, that I should mention it. And it took its way into the sea in a marvelous manner' (Quran 18:63). Musa, peace be upon him, remembered what he had been told: that some of your provision will guide you to him. He said: 'That is what we were seeking' (Quran 18:64). 'So they returned, retracing their footsteps' (Quran 18:64), following their tracks, until they reached the rock where the fish had done what it did. Musa, peace be upon him, saw the track of the fish, and they followed the track of the fish, walking upon the water, until they reached an island among the islands of the sea. 'They found a servant from among Our servants to whom We had given mercy from Us and had taught him from Our own knowledge' (Quran 18:65). Musa said to him: 'May I follow you on the condition that you teach me from what you have been taught of right guidance?' (Quran 18:66). He said: 'Indeed, you will not be able to have patience with me' (Quran 18:67). 'And how can you have patience for what you do not encompass in knowledge?' (Quran 18:68), to His words: 'until I mention to you something concerning it' (Quran 18:70), meaning: until I myself mention that to you. 'So they set out until, when they had boarded the ship, he made a hole in it' (Quran 18:71), to His words: 'So they set out until, when they met a boy' (Quran 18:74). On the seashore there were boys playing, and he singled out the most handsome and the best of them. 'And he killed him. He said: "Have you killed a pure soul for no soul? You have certainly done a detestable thing"' (Quran 18:74). 'He said: "Did I not tell you that you would not be able to have patience with me?"' (Quran 18:75). Ibn Abbas said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "At that point the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, Musa, felt ashamed, and he said: 'If I ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me company; you have already received an excuse from me' (Quran 18:76). 'So they set out until, when they came to the people of a village, they asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. And they found in it a wall that was about to collapse, and he set it upright' (Quran 18:77), to: 'I will inform you of the interpretation of that over which you could not have patience. As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea, and I intended to damage it' (Quran 18:78-79), to: 'And behind them was a king who was seizing every ship by force' (Quran 18:79). And in the recitation of Ubayy ibn Kab: 'seizing every sound ship by force.' 'So I intended to damage it' (Quran 18:79), so that the king would not take it. When they had passed the king, they would repair it and make use of it, and it would remain theirs. 'As for the boy, his parents were believers' (Quran 18:80), to: 'That is the interpretation of that over which you could not have patience' (Quran 18:82). Then a bird came and dipped its beak into the sea. He said to him: O Musa, do you know what this bird is saying? He said: I do not know. He said: Indeed, this bird says: The knowledge that you two possess, in the knowledge of Allah, is only like what I diminish with my beak from all of this sea."

I am Muhammad ibn Abd al-Ala, narrated to us al-Mutamir, from his father, from Raqabah, from Abu Ishaq, from Said ibn Jubayr, who said: It was said to Ibn Abbas: Indeed Nawf claims that Musa, peace be upon him, who went seeking knowledge is not Musa of the Children of Israel. He said: Did you hear that, O Said? He said: Yes. He said: Nawf has lied. Ubayy ibn Kab narrated to us, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: "While Musa, peace be upon him, was among his people reminding them of the days of Allah—and the days of Allah are His blessings and His trials—he said: I do not know of any man on earth better than me or more knowledgeable than me. Allah revealed to him: I know better than he, or: Where is he? Indeed, there is a man on earth who is more knowledgeable than you. He said: My Lord, then guide me to him. It was said to him: Take a salted fish as provision, for wherever you lose the fish. He said: So he set out, he and his young companion, until they reached the rock. He was confounded, and he left his young companion. The fish moved in the water, and whenever he tried to reach it, it became like a hole. He said: His young companion said: Shall I not catch up with the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and inform him?" He said: He forgot. When they had passed beyond, he said to his young companion: 'Give us our morning meal; we have certainly suffered from this journey of ours much fatigue' (Quran 18:62). He said: They had not experienced fatigue until they had passed beyond what they had been commanded. He said: He then remembered and said: 'Do you remember when we betook ourselves to the rock? Indeed, I forgot the fish, and none made me forget it except Satan, that I should mention it. And it took its way into the sea in a marvelous manner. He said: That is what we were seeking. So they returned, retracing their footsteps' (Quran 18:63-64). He showed him the place of the fish, and he said: Here it was described to me. He said: He went searching, and there he found al-Khadir, covered with a cloth, lying on his back. He said: Peace be upon you. He removed the cloth from his face and said: And upon you be peace. Who are you? He said: I am Musa. He said: And who is Musa? He said: Musa of the Children of Israel. He said: What has brought you? He said: I have come so that you may teach me 'from what you have been taught of right guidance' (Quran 18:66). 'He said: Indeed, you will not be able to have patience with me' (Quran 18:67). 'And how can you have patience for what you do not encompass in knowledge?' (Quran 18:68)—something I have been commanded to do; when you see me, you will not have patience. 'He said: You will find me, if Allah wills, patient, and I will not disobey you in any matter' (Quran 18:69). 'He said: If you follow me, then do not ask me about anything until I mention to you something concerning it' (Quran 18:70). 'So they set out until, when they had boarded the ship, he made a hole in it' (Quran 18:71). He said: He attacked it. Musa, peace be upon him, said to him: 'Have you made a hole in it to drown its people? You have certainly done a terrible thing' (Quran 18:71). 'He said: Did I not tell you that you would not be able to have patience with me?' (Quran 18:72). 'He said: Do not take me to task for what I forgot, and do not burden me with difficulty in my affair' (Quran 18:73). So they set out until they met boys playing. He said: He went to one of them, acting on his own judgment, and killed him. He said: At that, Musa was seized with a terrible fright. 'He said: Have you killed a pure soul for no soul? You have certainly done a detestable thing' (Quran 18:74). The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "At this point, the mercy of Allah was upon us and upon Musa. Had he not hastened, he would have seen wonders. But a sense of shame before his companion overcame him." He said: "'He said: If I ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me company; you have already received an excuse from me' (Quran 18:76). And had he been patient, he would have seen wonders." He said: Whenever he mentioned any of the prophets, he would begin with himself: The mercy of Allah be upon us and upon this brother of mine; the mercy of Allah be upon us. He said: "'So they set out until, when they came to the people of a village' (Quran 18:77). They went around the gathering places and 'asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. And they found in it a wall that was about to collapse, and he set it upright. He said: If you wished, you could have taken a wage for it' (Quran 18:77-78). 'He said: This is the parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that over which you could not have patience. As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea' (Quran 18:78-79), to the end of the verse. When the one who selected ships came, he would find it holed and pass it by, and they would repair it with a plank. 'As for the boy,' he was sealed, the day he was sealed, as a disbeliever. His parents had been tender toward him, and had he reached maturity, he would have overwhelmed them 'with transgression and disbelief' (Quran 18:80). 'So their Lord intended to replace for them one better than him in purity and closer in mercy' (Quran 18:81). 'As for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city' (Quran 18:82)—the verse."

I am Qutaybah ibn Said, in his hadith, from Sufyan, from Amr, from Said ibn Jubayr, who said: I said to Ibn Abbas: Indeed Nawf al-Bakali claims that Musa of the Children of Israel is not the Musa of al-Khadir. He said: The enemy of Allah has lied. Ubayy ibn Kab narrated to us, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: "Musa, peace be upon him, stood as an orator among the Children of Israel, and it was said to him: Who among people is the most knowledgeable? He said: I. So Allah rebuked him for not referring the knowledge back to Him. Allah revealed to him: Rather, a servant of Mine at the junction of the two seas is more knowledgeable than you. He said: My Lord, then how is the way to him? He said: Take a fish in a basket, and wherever you lose the fish, follow it. So Musa set out, and with him was his young companion Yusha ibn Nun, and with them was the fish, until they reached a rock and alighted beside it. Musa, peace be upon him, laid his head down and slept." Sufyan said in a narration other than that of Amr: "At the base of the rock there was a spring called al-Hayah; nothing touched its water without coming to life. The fish was touched by the water of that spring, and it moved and slipped from the basket and entered the sea. When Musa awoke, he said to his young companion: 'Give us our morning meal; we have certainly suffered from this journey of ours much fatigue' (Quran 18:62). He said: They did not find fatigue until they had passed beyond what they had been commanded. His young companion Yusha ibn Nun said to him: 'Do you remember when we betook ourselves to the rock? Indeed, I forgot the fish, and none made me forget it except Satan, that I should mention it. And it took its way into the sea' (Quran 18:63). Musa said to him: 'That is what we were seeking. So they returned, retracing their footsteps' (Quran 18:64). They went back following their tracks and found a passage in the sea like an arch, the path of the fish, and it was a wonder to them and a passage for the fish. When they reached the rock, they found a man covered with a cloth. Musa, peace be upon him, greeted him with peace. He said: And how is peace in your land? He said: I am Musa. He said: Musa of the Children of Israel? He said: Yes. He said: 'May I follow you on the condition that you teach me from what you have been taught of right guidance?' (Quran 18:66). Al-Khadir said to him: O Musa, indeed you possess knowledge from the knowledge of Allah that Allah has taught you, and I possess knowledge from the knowledge of Allah that Allah has taught me, which you do not know. He said: Rather, I will follow you. 'He said: If you follow me, then do not ask me about anything until I mention to you something concerning it. So they set out' (Quran 18:70-71), walking along the shore. A ship passed by them, and al-Khadir was recognized, so they carried them aboard the ship. They boarded, and a sparrow landed on the edge of the ship and dipped its beak into the sea. Al-Khadir said: O Musa, my knowledge and your knowledge and the knowledge of all creation, in the knowledge of Allah, is only like the amount this sparrow has dipped its beak. He said: Before Musa knew it, al-Khadir went to the bow of the ship and made a hole in it. Musa said: A people carried us without charge; you went to their ship and 'made a hole in it to drown its people? You have certainly done a terrible thing' (Quran 18:71). 'He said: Did I not tell you that you would not be able to have patience with me?' (Quran 18:72). 'He said: Do not take me to task for what I forgot, and do not burden me with difficulty in my affair' (Quran 18:73). So they set out. They found a boy playing with the boys, and al-Khadir took his head and cut it off. Musa said to him: 'Have you killed a pure soul for no soul? You have certainly done a detestable thing' (Quran 18:74). 'He said: Did I not tell you that you would not be able to have patience with me?' (Quran 18:75). 'He said: If I ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me company; you have already received an excuse from me' (Quran 18:76). 'So they set out until, when they came to the people of a village, they asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality' (Quran 18:77). Al-Khadir passed by a wall 'that was about to collapse, and he set it upright' (Quran 18:77). Musa said to him: We entered this village and they did not feed us, nor did they offer us hospitality. 'If you wished, you could have taken a wage for it' (Quran 18:77). 'He said: This is the parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that over which you could not have patience' (Quran 18:78)." He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "We wished that Musa had been patient so that more of their story could have been narrated to us." Ibn Abbas used to recite it: "And ahead of them was a king who was seizing every ship by force, and as for the boy, he was a disbeliever."
