Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, saying: Humayd ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, from Salamah ibn Nabt, from Nu'aym, from Nabt, from Salim ibn 'Ubayd, who said — and he was one of the Companions of the Suffah: "The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, fell unconscious during his illness. Then he regained consciousness and said: 'Has the prayer come in?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Command Bilal to give the adhan, and command Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.' Then he fell unconscious again. He regained consciousness and said: 'Has the prayer come in?' We said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Command Bilal to give the adhan, and command Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.' 'A'ishah said: 'My father is a tender-hearted man.' He said: 'You are among the companions of Yusuf. Command Bilal to give the adhan, and command Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.' So they commanded Bilal to give the adhan, and they commanded Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. When the prayer was commenced, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: 'Has the prayer been commenced?' We said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Bring me a person on whom I may lean.' So Barirah came, and another person with her. He leaned upon her and came, while Abu Bakr was praying. He sat beside him. Abu Bakr began to move back, but he held him until he finished the prayer." He said: "When the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, passed away, 'Umar said: 'Let no one speak of his death, or I shall strike him with this sword of mine.' So they fell silent. They were an unlettered people among whom there had been no prophet before him. They said: 'O Salim, go to the companion of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and call him.' He said: 'I went out and found Abu Bakr standing in the mosque.' Abu Bakr said: 'The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, has died.' I said: ''Umar says: "Let no one speak of his death, or I shall strike him with this sword of mine."' He placed his hand upon his forearm, then he set out walking until he entered. He said: 'They made room for him until he came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and bent over him, until his face nearly touched the face of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, until it became clear to him that he had indeed died.' Abu Bakr said: 'You are mortal, and they are mortal.' They said: 'O companion of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, has the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, died?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'They knew that he had spoken the truth.' They said: 'O companion of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, shall the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, be prayed over?' He said: 'Yes.' They said: 'How shall we pray over him?' He said: 'Groups shall enter and make takbir and supplicate, then they shall leave and others shall come.' They said: 'O companion of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, shall the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, be buried?' He said: 'Yes.' They said: 'Where shall he be buried?' He said: 'In the place where Allah took his soul, for He did not take his soul except in a pure place.' He said: 'They knew that he had spoken the truth.' Then Abu Bakr said: 'Your companion is with you.' Abu Bakr went out, and the Muhajirun gathered and began to consult among themselves. Then they said: 'Go to our brothers among the Ansar, for they have a share in this right.' They came to the Ansar, and the Ansar said: 'An amir from us and an amir from you.' 'Umar said: 'Two swords in one sheath — they cannot be reconciled.' Then he took the hand of Abu Bakr and said: 'Who has these three verses: "When he said to his companion" — who is his companion? "When they were both in the grotto" — who were they? "Grieve not, for Allah is with us" — with whom?' Then he gave him the bay'ah. Then he said: 'Give the bay'ah.' So the people gave the best and most beautiful pledge of allegiance."
