Ahmad ibn Sulayman reported, he said: 'Ubayd Allah ibn Musa said: Isra'il informed us, from Abu Ishaq, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: Ubayy ibn Ka'b narrated to me that he heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say:\n\n\The mercy of Allah be upon us and upon Musa. Had he not been hasty and felt shy"," and had a sense of shame before his companion—saying"," 'If I ask you about anything after this"," then do not accompany me'—he would indeed have seen wonders from his companion.\" He said: \"And the Prophet"," peace and blessings be upon him"," when he mentioned any of the Prophets"," would begin by saying: 'The mercy of Allah be upon us and upon my brother Salih; the mercy of Allah be upon us and upon my brother 'Ad.' Then he said: 'Musa"," peace and blessings be upon him"," was one day addressing his people when he said to them: \"There is no one on earth more knowledgeable than me.\" So Allah revealed to him that there was on earth one more knowledgeable than he"," and the sign of that was that he should provision himself with a salted fish"," and when he lost it"," that would be the place where he would find it.' So he set out with his young companion until they reached the place where they had been commanded. When they arrived at the rock"," Musa"," peace and blessings be upon him"," went in search (of the fish)"," while his companion placed the fish upon the rock. It began to move and made its way into the sea"," entering it through a tunnel. His companion said: 'When the Prophet of Allah"," peace and blessings be upon him"," comes"," I will tell him.' But Satan caused him to forget. So they set out and were afflicted with the fatigue and exhaustion that befalls a traveler"," until Musa had passed beyond the point where he had been commanded to stop. Musa said to his companion: 'Bring us our lunch. We have indeed encountered fatigue from this journey of ours.' His companion said: 'O Prophet of Allah"," do you recall when we took shelter at the rock? I forgot the fish—and nothing made me forget it except Satan—that I should tell you about it. It made its way into the sea in a wondrous manner.' He said: 'That is what we were seeking.' So they retraced their steps"," following their tracks"," until they reached the rock. Musa circled around it and found a figure wrapped in a garment. He greeted him"," and he raised his head and said: 'Who are you?' He said: 'Musa.' He said: 'Which Musa?' He said: 'Musa of the Children of Israel.' He said: 'What do you want?' He said: 'I have been told that you possess knowledge"," and I wished to accompany you.' He said: 'You will never be able to have patience with me.' He said: 'You will find me"," if Allah wills"," patient"," and I will not disobey you in any matter.' He said: 'How can you be patient over that of which you have no knowledge?' He said: 'I have been commanded to do so. You will find me"," if Allah wills"," patient.' He said: 'Then if you follow me"," do not ask me about anything until I mention it to you.' So they set out until"," when they boarded a ship"," he (the companion) went out and stayed behind to make a hole in it. Musa said to him: 'Have you made a hole in it to drown its people? You have indeed brought something terrible.' He said: 'Did I not say that you would never be able to have patience with me?' He said: 'Do not take me to task for what I have forgotten"," and do not burden me with difficulty in my affair.' So they set out until"," when they came upon some boys playing on the shore of the sea"," among whom was a boy who was the most handsome and the cleanest of them all"," he killed him. Musa"," peace and blessings be upon him"," was alarmed at that and said: 'You have killed an innocent soul without it being in retaliation for another soul. You have indeed brought something abominable.' He said: 'Did I not tell you that you would never be able to have patience with me?' Then Musa felt a sense of shame before his companion and said: 'If I ask you about anything after this"," then do not accompany me. You have indeed received an excuse from me.' So they set out until"," when they came to the people of a miserly village"," and Musa was exhausted"," they did not extend hospitality to them. They found in it a wall that was about to collapse"," and he set it upright. Musa said to him"," on account of the exhaustion that had befallen him: 'If you had wished"," you could have taken a wage for it.' He said: 'This is the parting between you and me.' Musa took hold of the edge of his garment and said: 'Tell me (the explanation).' He said: 'As for the ship"," it belonged to poor people who worked on the sea"," and behind them was a king who was seizing every ship by force. When he passed by it and saw it damaged"," he left them alone"," and its people repaired it with a piece of wood and made use of it. As for the boy"," he was"," from the day he was created"," a disbeliever by nature"," and great love had been placed in his parents for him. Had they disobeyed him in anything"," he would have driven them to transgression and disbelief. So we wished that their Lord would give them in exchange one better than him in purity and closer in mercy. Then his father lay with his mother"," and she bore one better than him in purity and closer in mercy. As for the wall"," it belonged to two orphan boys in the city"," and beneath it was a treasure belonging to them"," and their father had been a righteous man. So your Lord intended that they reach their full strength and extract their treasure"," as a mercy from your Lord. And I did not do it of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that over which you could not bear patience.'\"""
