قِيلَ : مُحَمَّدٌ ، قِيلَ : Isma'il ibn Mas'ud al-Jahdari informed us, he said: Yazid ibn Zurai' informed us, he said: Hisham—meaning Ibn Abi 'Abd Allah—and Sa'id both said: Qatadah narrated to us, he said: Anas ibn Malik narrated to us, from Malik ibn Sa'sa'ah, that the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
"While I was at the House, in a state between sleep and wakefulness, one of the three (angels) came forward between the two (others). I was brought a golden basin, filled with wisdom and faith. Then (my chest) was split open from the throat to the lower part of the abdomen, after which my heart was washed with the water of Zamzam. Then it was filled with wisdom and faith. I was then brought a white beast, smaller than a mule and larger than a donkey, called al-Buraq. I set out with Jibril until we reached the lowest heaven. It was said: 'Who is this?' It was said: 'Jibril.' It was said: 'Who is with you?' It was said: 'Muhammad.' It was said: 'Has he been sent for?' 'Welcome to him! What a good visit he has come with!' I came upon Adam and greeted him, and he said: 'Welcome to you, O son and Prophet.' We then came to the second heaven. It was said: 'Who is this?' It was said: 'Jibril.' It was said: 'Who is with you?' It was said: 'Muhammad.' It was said: 'Has he been sent for? Welcome to him, and what a good visit he has come with!' I came upon Yahya and 'Isa and greeted them both, and they said: 'Welcome to you, O brother and Prophet.' We then came to the third heaven. It was said: 'Who is this?' It was said: 'Jibril.' It was said: 'Who is with you?' It was said: 'Muhammad.' It was said: 'Has he been sent for? Welcome to him, and what a good visit he has come with!' I came upon Yusuf and greeted him, and he said: 'Welcome to you, O brother and Prophet.' We then came to the fourth heaven. It was said: 'Who is this?' It was said: 'Jibril.' It was said: 'Who is with you?' It was said: 'Muhammad.' It was said: 'Has he been sent for? Welcome to him, and what a good visit he has come with!' I came upon Idris and greeted him, and he said: 'Welcome to you, O brother and Prophet.' We then came to the fifth heaven. It was said: 'Who is this?' It was said: 'Jibril.' It was said: 'Who is with you?' It was said: 'Muhammad.' It was said: 'Has he been sent for? Welcome to him, and what a good visit he has come with!' I came upon Harun and greeted him, and he said: 'Welcome to you, O brother and Prophet.' We then came to the sixth heaven. It was said: 'Who is this?' It was said: 'Jibril.' It was said: 'Who is with you?' It was said: 'Muhammad.' It was said: 'Has he been sent for? Welcome to him, and what a good visit he has come with!' I came upon Musa and greeted him, and he said: 'Welcome to you, O brother and Prophet.' When I passed him by, he wept. It was said: 'What makes you weep?' He said: 'O Lord, this young man whom You have sent after me—more of his Ummah will enter Paradise than of my Ummah.' We then came to the seventh heaven. It was said: 'Who is this?' It was said: 'Jibril.' It was said: 'Who is with you?' It was said: 'Muhammad.' It was said: 'Has he been sent for? Welcome to him, and what a good visit he has came with!' I came upon Ibrahim and greeted him, and he said: 'Welcome to you, O son and Prophet.'
Then al-Bayt al-Ma'mur was raised up for me. I asked Jibril, and he said: 'This is al-Bayt al-Ma'mur; seventy thousand angels pray in it every day, and when they leave it, they never return to it for the rest of their time.' Then Sidrat al-Muntaha was raised up for me. Its fruits were like the water-skins of Hajar, and its leaves were like the ears of elephants. At its base were four rivers: two hidden rivers and two visible rivers. I asked Jibril, and he said: 'As for the two hidden ones'—then he mentioned a word to that effect—'they are the rivers of Paradise, and as for the two visible ones, they are the Euphrates and the Nile.'
Then fifty prayers were enjoined upon me. I proceeded until I came upon Musa. He said: 'What have you done?' I said: 'Fifty prayers have been enjoined upon me.' He said: 'I know the people better than you. I tried the Children of Israel with the utmost effort, and your Ummah will not be able to bear that. Return to your Lord and ask Him to lighten it for you.' So I returned to my Lord and He made it forty prayers. I then proceeded until I came upon Musa, and he said: 'What have you done?' I said: 'He made it forty prayers.' He said: 'I know the people better than you, and I tried the Children of Israel with the utmost effort, and your Ummah will not be able to bear that. Return to your Lord and ask Him to lighten it for you.' So I returned to my Lord and asked Him to lighten it for me, and He made it thirty prayers. I then proceeded until I came upon Musa, and he said: 'What have you done?' I said: 'He made it thirty prayers.' He said: 'I know the people better than you, and I tried the Children of Israel with the utmost effort, and your Ummah will not be able to bear that. Return to your Lord and ask Him to lighten it for you.' So I returned to my Lord and asked Him to lighten it for me, and He made it twenty prayers. I then proceeded until I came upon Musa, and he said: 'What have you done?' I said: 'He made it twenty prayers.' He said: 'I know the people better than you, and I tried the Children of Israel with the utmost effort, and your Ummah will not be able to bear that. Return to your Lord and ask Him to lighten it for you.' So I returned to my Lord and asked Him to lighten it for me, and He made it ten prayers. I then proceeded until I came upon Musa, and he said: 'What have you done?' I said: 'He made it ten prayers.' He said: 'I know the people better than you, and I tried the Children of Israel with the utmost effort, and your Ummah will not be able to bear that. Return to your Lord and ask Him to lighten it for you.' So I returned to my Lord and asked Him to lighten it for me, and He made it five prayers. I then proceeded until I came upon Musa, and he said: 'What have you done?' I said: 'He made it five prayers.' He said: 'I know the people better than you, and I tried the Children of Israel with the utmost effort, and your Ummah will not be able to bear that. Return to your Lord and ask Him to lighten it for you.' I said: 'I have accepted and submitted.' Then a voice called out: 'I have decreed My obligation and have lightened it for My servants, and I shall reward a good deed with ten times its like.'"
Abu 'Abd al-Rahman said: This hadith was also narrated by al-Zuhri, and al-Zuhri contradicted Qatadah in its isnad and its text. Ibn Wahb narrated it from Yunus, from al-Zuhri, from Anas, from Abu Dharr. And some of the companions of Yunus narrated it from Yunus, from al-Zuhri, from Anas, from Ubayy, but this is an error. It is likely that the word "Dharr" dropped from the text, so it became "'an Abi," and he assumed it was Ubayy. This hadith was also narrated from al-Zuhri, from Anas, and Thabit narrated it from Anas, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, without mentioning Malik ibn Sa'sa'ah or Abu Dharr.
