Ali ibn Said al-Razi narrated to us, he said: Ishaq ibn Musa al-Ansari narrated to us, he said: Said ibn Khuthaym narrated to us, he said: Ibn Shubruma narrated to us, he said: Abu al-Khalil narrated to us, from Abu al-Saifa, from Jundub, he said: When the Kharijites parted from Ali, he went out seeking them, and we went out with him. We reached the camp of the people, and they had a hum like the hum of bees from reciting the Quran, and among them were owners of calluses and owners of hooded cloaks. When I saw them, doubt entered me from that, so I withdrew, planted my spear, dismounted my horse, laid my shield down, spread my armor upon it, took my horse's bridle, and stood praying toward my spear, saying in my prayer: O Allah, if fighting these people is obedience to You, then permit it, and if it is disobedience, then show me Your acquittal. While I was thus, Ali came upon the mule of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When he drew level with me he said: Seek refuge with Allah from doubt, O Jundub. I hastened to him, and he dismounted and stood praying, when a man came upon a pony at a trot and said: O Commander of the Believers. He said: What do you want? He said: Do you need the people? He said: What of that? He said: They have crossed the river and gone. He said: They have not crossed it? I said: Glory be to Allah. Then another came swifter in running and said: O Commander of the Believers. He said: What do you want? He said: Do you need the people? He said: What of that? He said: They have crossed the river and gone. I said: Allah is Greatest. Ali said: They have not crossed it. Then another came urging his horse and said: O Commander of the Believers. He said: What do you want? He said: Do you need the people? He said: What of that? He said: They have crossed the river. Ali said: They have not crossed it, nor will they cross it, and they will surely be killed short of it; a covenant from Allah and His Messenger. I said: Allah is Greatest. Then I stood and held his stirrup for him, and he mounted his horse. Then I returned to my armor and wore it, and to my horse and mounted it. Then I placed my foot in the stirrup and went out riding beside him. He said to me: O Jundub. I said: At your service, O Commander of the Believers. He said: As for me, I shall send to them a man reciting the mushaf, calling them to the Book of their Lord and the sunna of their Prophet, and he will not turn his face to us until they shower him with arrows. O Jundub, indeed not ten of us will be killed, nor ten of them spared. We reached the people while they were in their camp where they were, not having moved. Ali called out among his companions and arrayed them, then came to the rank from one end to the other twice, saying: Who will take this mushaf and walk with it to them, calling them to the Book of their Lord and the sunna of their Prophet, while he will be killed, and Paradise is his? None answered him but a youth of Banu Amir ibn Sasa. When Ali saw his young age, he said to him: Return to your station. Then he called a second time, and none came out to him but that youth. Then he called a third time, and none came out to him but that youth. Ali said to him: Take it. So he took the mushaf. He said: You will indeed be killed, and you will not turn your face to us until they shower you with arrows. The youth went out walking with the mushaf to the people. When he drew near them where they could hear, they stood and began fighting before he returned. He said: A man shot him with an arrow, and he turned his face to us and sat down. Ali said: Take to the people. Jundub said: I killed with this hand of mine, after what had entered me of what had entered me, eight before I prayed Zuhr, and neither ten of us were killed nor ten of them spared, as he said. No one narrated this hadith from Ibn Shubruma except Said ibn Khuthaym; Ishaq ibn Musa al-Ansari was alone in transmitting it.
