3696 - 'Umar ibn Hafs al-Sadusi narrated to us, he said: 'Asim ibn 'Ali narrated to us, he said: Qays ibn al-Rabi' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Layla, from Dawud ibn 'Ali, from his father, from 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abbas, he said: al-'Abbas sent me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him); I came to him in the evening while he was in the house of my maternal aunt Maymunah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood praying at night; when he had prayed the two rak'ahs before Fajr, he said: O Allah, I ask You for mercy from Yourself by which You guide my heart, gather my affairs, mend my disorder, restore my affection, rectify my religion, guard my absent, raise my present, purify my deeds, whiten my face, inspire me with my right guidance, and protect me from every evil. O Allah, grant me true faith and certainty after which there is no disbelief, and mercy by which I attain the honor of Your nobility in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You success at the meeting, the abode of the martyrs, the life of the fortunate, the companionship of the prophets, and victory over the enemies. O Allah, I lay my need before You, though my judgment falls short, my deeds are weak, and I am in need of Your mercy; so I ask You, O Decider of matters and Healer of breasts, as You separate between the seas, to shelter me from the punishment of the Blaze, from the call of woe, and from the trial of the graves. O Allah, whatever good my judgment falls short of, my deeds are too weak for, and my intention or wish does not reach - of good You promised to any of Your servants or good You will give to any of Your creation - I desire it from You, and I ask You for it, O Lord of the Worlds. O Allah, make us guides, guided, neither straying nor misleading, at war with Your enemies and at peace with Your allies; we love people through love of You, and we oppose through enmity to You whoever of Your creation opposes You. O Allah, this is the supplication and upon You is the response; O Allah, this is the effort and upon You is reliance; there is no power nor strength except through Allah. O Allah, Possessor of the strong rope and the rightful command, I ask You for security on the Day of Threat, and Paradise on the Day of Eternity with the near ones, the witnesses, those who bow and prostrate, and those who fulfill covenants; You are Merciful, Loving, and You do what You will. Glory be to the One who donned might and spoke with it; glory be to the One to whom glorification is due; glory be to the Possessor of might and splendor; glory be to the Possessor of power and generosity; glory be to the One who encompassed everything with His knowledge. O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my grave, light in my hearing and light in my sight, light in my hair, light in my skin, light in my flesh, light in my blood, light in my bones, light before me, light behind me, light on my right, light on my left, light above me, and light beneath me. O Allah, increase me in light, grant me light, and make light for me. None narrated this hadith from Dawud ibn 'Ali except Ibn Abi Layla.
