Masadah ibn Sad narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn al-Mundhir narrated to us, Abdulaziz ibn Imran narrated to us, Abdurrahman and Abdullah, sons of Zayd ibn Aslam, narrated to me, from their father, from Ata ibn Yasar, from Ibn Abbas: Arbad ibn Qays ibn Juzayy ibn Khalid ibn Jafar ibn Kilab and Amir ibn al-Tufayl ibn Malik ibn Jafar came to Madinah to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). They came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while he sat, and sat before him. So Amir ibn al-Tufayl said, 'O Muhammad, what will you give me if I accept Islam?' So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'For you what is for the Muslims, and upon you what is upon them.' Amir said, 'Will you give me authority after you if I accept Islam?' So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'For you what is for the Muslims, and upon you what is upon them.' Amir said, 'Will you give me authority after you if I accept Islam?' So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'That is neither for you nor for your people; but for you is the command of the cavalry.' He said, 'I already have now the bridles of horses drawn; give me the desert and yours be the towns.' So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'No.' When Arbad and Amir went out, Amir said, 'O Arbad, I shall distract Muhammad from you with talk, so strike him with the sword; for if you kill Muhammad, the people will do no more than accept blood-money and dislike war, so we shall give them the blood-money.' Arbad said, 'I shall do it.' So they came back to him, and Amir said, 'O Muhammad, stand with me that I may speak to you.' So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood with him, withdrawn toward the wall, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood with him speaking to him, while Arbad drew the sword. When he placed his hand upon the sword it stiffened upon the hilt of the sword, and he could not draw the sword. And Arbad was slow with the striking upon Amir, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned and saw Amir and what he was doing, and turned away from them. When Amir and Arbad left the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), they went on until, when they were at the Harrah - the Harrah of Banu Waqim - they alighted, and Sad ibn Muadh and Usayd ibn Hudayr came out to them and said, 'Depart, O enemies of Allah.' So Amir said, 'Who is this, O Sad?' He said, 'Usayd ibn Hudayr al-Kataib.' So they left until, when they were at al-Raqm, Allah sent a thunderbolt upon Arbad and killed him, and Amir went on until, when he was at al-Khuraym, Allah sent an ulcer which seized him. Night overtook him in the house of a woman of Banu Salul, and he kept touching the ulcer in his throat, saying, 'A gland like a camel's gland in the house of a Salul woman; he wishes to die in her house.' Then he mounted his horse and spurred it until he died upon it, returning. Concerning them was revealed, 'Allah knows what every female bears and what the wombs diminish and increase' up to His saying, 'and they have besides Him no protector' - he said: The successive angels by Allah's command guard Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then he mentioned Arbad and what killed him, saying, 'He it is who shows you lightning in fear and hope' up to His saying, 'and He is mighty in assault.' No one narrated this hadith from Zayd ibn Aslam except his two sons, and none narrated from them except Abdulaziz ibn Imran; Ibrahim ibn al-Mundhir is alone in it.
