Masadah ibn Sad narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn al-Mundhir narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Talhah al-Taymi narrated to us, Abdulhakim ibn Sufyan ibn Abi Namir narrated to us, from Sharik ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Namir, from Jabir ibn Abdullah who said: We set out on the campaign of Dhat al-Riqa until, when we were at Harrah Waqim, a bedouin woman with her son presented herself, and came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, this son of mine - Satan has overpowered me through him.' So he said, 'Bring him near to me.' So she brought him near, and he said, 'Open his mouth.' So she opened it, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) spat in it, then said, 'Be gone, enemy of Allah, and I am the Messenger of Allah' - he said it three times - then said, 'Take your son; there is no harm upon him, and nothing of what afflicted him shall return to him.' Then we set out and alighted at mid-morning in a waterless desert with no tree, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Jabir, 'O Jabir, go and look for a place for me' - meaning for relieving himself. So I went out and found only two separate trees, which if joined would have screened him. So I returned to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I saw nothing to screen you except two separate trees which, if joined, would screen you.' So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'Go to them and say to them: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) says to you: Join together.' So I went out and said it to them, and they joined until they were as if upon one root. Then I returned and told the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out until he relieved himself, then returned and said, 'Go to them and say to them: The Messenger of Allah says: Return as you were, each one to its place.' So I returned and said to them, and they returned. Then we set out and alighted in a valley of Banu Muharib, and a man of Banu Muharib called Ghawrath ibn al-Harith confronted him while the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wore his sword hanging. He said, 'O Muhammad, give me this sword of yours.' So he unsheathed it and handed it to him; he brandished it and looked at it a while, then turned to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, 'O Muhammad, what protects you from me?' He said, 'Allah protects me from you.' So his hand trembled until the sword fell from his hand, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took it, then said, 'O Ghawrath, who protects you from me?' He said, 'No one; may my father be ransom for you.' So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'O Allah, suffice us against Ghawrath and his people.' Then we came back, and a man of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came carrying a birds' nest with chicks in it, their parents following him and alighting upon the man's hand. So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned to those with him and said, 'Do you marvel at what these two birds do with their chicks? By Him who sent me with the truth, Allah is more merciful to His servants than these two birds are to their chicks.' Then we came back until, when we were at Harrah Waqim, the bedouin woman who had come with her son met us with a skin of milk and a sheep, and gave them to him as a gift. So he said, 'How is your son? Has anything of what afflicted him befallen him?' She said, 'By Him who sent you with the truth, nothing of what afflicted him has befallen him.' And he accepted her gift. Then we came on until, when we were at a descent of the Harrah, a camel came trotting. So he said, 'Do you know what this camel said?' They said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'This is a camel that came to me seeking my protection against its master; it claims it plowed for him years until, when it became mangy and emaciated and old, he wanted to slaughter it. Go with him, O Jabir, to his owner and bring him.' So I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I do not know its owner.' He said, 'It will guide you to him.' So it went out ahead of me, hastening, until it stood with me in a gathering of Banu Khatmah. I said, 'Where is the lord of this camel?' They said, 'So-and-so son of so-and-so.' So I went to him and said, 'Answer the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).' So he came out with me until he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him, 'This camel of yours seeks my protection against you; it claims you plowed with it a long time until you made it mangy and emaciated and it grew old, then you wanted to slaughter it?' He said, 'By Him who sent you with the truth, it is indeed so.' So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him, 'Sell it to me.' He said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' So he bought it from him, then set it free among the trees until it raised a hump, and whenever any of the Emigrants' or Helpers' water-camels ailed, he would give it to him; and it remained thus a long time. Ibrahim ibn al-Mundhir said: Muhammad ibn Talhah said to me: The campaign of Dhat al-Riqa used to be called the campaign of marvels. No one narrated this hadith from Sharik ibn Abdullah except Abdulhakim ibn Sufyan, nor from Abdulhakim except Muhammad ibn Talhah; Ibrahim ibn al-Mundhir is alone in it.
