Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Ibrahim Shadhan narrated to us, my father narrated to us, Mujashi' ibn Amr narrated to us, Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to us, Uqayl ibn Khalid narrated to us, from Ibn Shihab, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: The people suffered drought in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Muslims came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, rain has failed, trees have withered, livestock have perished, and people are in hardship; ask your Lord for rain for us. He said: When such-and-such a day comes, go out, taking your charities with you. When that day came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the people went out, he walking and they walking, with tranquility and dignity upon them, until they reached the prayer ground. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went forward and prayed two rak'ahs with them, reciting aloud in them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to recite in the two Eids and the rain prayer in the first rak'ah the Opening of the Book and Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High, and in the second rak'ah the Opening of the Book and Has there reached you the story of the Overwhelming. When he finished his prayer, he faced the people, turned his cloak inside out, then knelt on his knees, raised his hands, uttered a takbir before seeking rain, then said: O Allah, give us rain and aid us. O Allah, give us a rain that brings aid, spacious, spring-like, plentiful, copious, enveloping, drenching, wholesome, agreeable, fertile, pasture-producing, heavy, comprehensive, pouring, covering, lasting, abundant, beneficial and not harmful, soon and not delayed. O Allah, with it give life to the lands, aid the servants, and make it provision for those present among us and the desert-dwellers. O Allah, send down upon our land its adornment, and send down in our land its settlement. O Allah, send down upon us pure water from the sky, revive with it a dead land, and give drink to the cattle and many people whom You created for us. He said: They had not moved before pieces of cloud advanced and joined together, then it rained upon them for seven days and nights without ceasing over Medina. The Muslims came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, the land is flooded, houses have collapsed, and roads are cut off; supplicate Allah for us to turn it away from us. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) laughed while on the pulpit until his molars appeared, in amazement at the quick boredom of the children of Adam, then said: O Allah, around us and not upon us. O Allah, on the tops of hills, where trees grow, the bottoms of valleys, and the backs of highlands. He said: So it broke away from Medina, remaining like a shield, raining on its pastures while not a drop fell in it. No one narrated this hadith from al-Zuhri except Uqayl, and none from Uqayl except Ibn Lahi'ah, and none from Ibn Lahi'ah except Mujashi' ibn Amr; Shadhan was alone in transmitting it.
