6577 - Muhammad ibn Jafar ibn Ayan al-Baghdadi narrated to us in Egypt, al-Hasan ibn Bishr al-Bajali narrated to us, al-Hakam ibn Abd al-Malik narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Anas ibn Malik who said: On the day of the conquest of Makkah, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) granted safety to the people except four persons: Abd al-Uzza ibn Khatal, and Miqyas ibn Subabah al-Kinani, and Abdullah ibn Sad ibn Abi Sarh, and Umm Sarah, a woman. As for Abd al-Uzza, he was killed while holding the curtains of the Kabah. He said: A man from the Ansar vowed to kill Abdullah ibn Sad ibn Abi Sarh when he saw him, and he was the foster brother of Uthman ibn Affan, so he brought him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) seeking his intercession, then when the Ansari saw him he wrapped himself with the sword, then went out seeking him, and found him in the circle of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so he feared to kill him, and kept hesitating, disliking to advance upon him because he was in the circle of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) extended his hand and pledged him, then said to the Ansari: I waited for you to fulfill your vow. He said: O Messenger of Allah, I was in awe of you, why did you not wink to me? He said: It is not for a prophet to wink. As for Miqyas, he had a brother killed by mistake with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent with him a man from Banu Fihr to collect for him the blood-money from the Ansar, then when he had collected the blood-money for him and returned, the Fihri slept, so Miqyas sprang, took a stone and struck his head with it, and killed him, then he came, saying: As for Umm Sarah, she was a freedwoman of Quraysh, so she came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), complained of need, and he gave her something, then a man came to her and handed her a letter for the people of Makkah, seeking closeness to them thereby to be protected regarding his dependents, and he had dependents with them, so Jibril informed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) of that, so he sent after her Umar ibn al-Khattab and Ali ibn Abi Talib, and they caught up with her, searched her, but could not find anything of it, so they turned back returning, then one of them said to his companion: By Allah, we did not lie nor were we lied to, return with us to her. So they returned to her, drew their swords, and said: By Allah, we shall make you taste death or you shall hand us the letter. She denied, then said: I will hand it to you on condition that you do not return me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). So they accepted from her, and she loosened the knot of her head and brought out a letter from her braids, and handed it to them, so they returned with it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and handed it to him, so he sent to the man and said: What is this letter? He said: I inform you O Messenger of Allah, there is none with you except that he has in Makkah one who protects him regarding his dependents except me, so I wrote this letter that they may be for me regarding my dependents. Then Allah revealed: O you who believe, do not take My enemy and your enemy as allies, extending to them affection, to the end of the verses. No one narrated the first of this hadith, the story of Miqyas, and Ibn Khatal, and Abdullah ibn Sad, from Qatadah, from Anas, except al-Hakam ibn Abd al-Malik; al-Hasan ibn Bishr alone transmitted it.
