5996 - Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Walid al-Sulami al-Basri narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Abd al-A'la al-San'ani narrated to us, he said: Mu'tamir ibn Sulayman narrated to us, he said: Kahmas ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, he said: Dawud ibn Abi Hind narrated to us, from Amir al-Sha'bi, he said: Abdillah ibn Umar narrated to us, from his father Umar ibn al-Khattab - the hadith of the lizard - that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was in a gathering of his companions when a Bedouin man from Banu Sulaym came who had hunted a lizard and put it in his sleeve, and took it to his camp, then saw a gathering and said: For whom is this gathering? They said: For this one who claims he is a prophet, so he pushed through people, then came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: O Muhammad, no woman ever bore one with a tongue more lying than you nor more hateful, and were it not that my people would call me hasty I would hasten upon you and kill you, and delight all people with your killing, so Umar said: O Messenger of Allah, let me kill him, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Do you not know that the forbearing almost becomes a prophet? Then he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: By al-Lat and al-Uzza I will not believe in you, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had said to him: O Bedouin, what made you say what you said, and speak untruth, and not honor my gathering? So he said: And you speak to me too - belittling the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) - by al-Lat and al-Uzza I will not believe in you unless this lizard believes in you? So he took out a lizard from his sleeve and threw it before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and said: If this lizard believes in you I will believe in you, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O lizard, so the lizard spoke in clear Arabic speech understood by all the people: At your service and happiness, O Messenger of the Lord of the worlds, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: Whom do you worship? He said: Him Whose Throne is in heaven, Whose authority is on earth, Whose path is in the sea, Whose mercy is in Paradise and Whose punishment is in the Fire, he said: Who am I, O lizard? He said: You are the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds and the seal of prophets, successful is he who believes you, and ruined is he who denies you, so the Bedouin said: I bear witness there is no god but Allah and that you are truly the Messenger of Allah, I came to you when none on earth was more hateful to me than you, and by Allah now you are more beloved to me than myself and my parents, and I have believed in you with my hair, my skin, my inside, my outside, my secret and my open. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: Praise be to Allah Who guided you to this religion which is exalted and not surpassed, Allah does not accept it except with prayer, and does not accept prayer except with Quran, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught him (al-Hamd) and: {Say: He is Allah, One}. He said: O Messenger of Allah, I never heard in prose or verse better than this, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: This is the speech of the Lord of the worlds, not poetry, when you recite {Say: He is Allah, One} once it is as if you recited a third of the Quran, and when you recite it twice it is as if you recited two thirds of the Quran, and when you recite it three times it is as if you recited the whole Quran, so the Bedouin said: Excellent is our God, He accepts little and gives much, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Give the Bedouin, so they gave him until they satiated him, then Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf stood and said: O Messenger of Allah, I want to give him a she-camel seeking nearness to Allah, below the Bukhti and above the Bedouin breed, ten months pregnant, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: You described what you give, shall I describe to you what Allah gives you in reward? He said: Yes, he said: For you a she-camel of hollow pearl, its legs of green emerald, its neck of yellow topaz, upon it a howdah, upon the howdah silk and brocade, passing over the Sirat like flashing lightning. Then the Bedouin left the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and met a thousand Bedouins on a thousand mounts with a thousand spears and a thousand swords, so he said to them: Where are you going? They said: We will fight this one who lies and claims he is a prophet, so the Bedouin said: I bear witness there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, they said to him: Have you apostatized? He said: I have not apostatized, and narrated to them the story, so they all said: There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, so that reached the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who met them without a cloak, so they dismounted from their mounts kissing whatever of him they could, saying: There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, so they said: Command us with a matter the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) loves, he said: Be under the banner of Khalid ibn al-Walid, he said: None of the Arabs believed like them, a thousand men all together, except Banu Sulaym. No one narrated this hadith from Dawud ibn Abi Hind in full except Kahmas, nor from Kahmas except Mu'tamir; Muhammad ibn Abd al-A'la was alone in transmitting it.
