60 - Abu Abd al-Malik Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Busri al-Dimashqi narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Aidh al-Dimashqi narrated to us, he said: al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, he said: Abu Tarfah Abbad ibn al-Rayyan al-Lakhmi narrated to us, he said: I heard Urwah ibn Ruwaym al-Lakhmi say: Amir ibn Ludayn al-Ash'ari narrated to me, he said: I heard Abu Layla al-Ash'ari say: Abu Dharr narrated to me, he said: The first thing that called me to Islam was that we were an Arab people, and a year of drought struck us, so I carried my mother and my brother - his name was Unays - to in-laws of ours in upper Najd. When we settled with them they honored us, but when a man of the tribe saw that, he went to my maternal uncle and said: Do you know that Unays visits your wife in your absence? It struck his heart, so I returned from herding my camels and found him gloomy, weeping. I said: Why do you weep, O uncle? He told me the news. I said: May Allah forbid that; we abhor indecency, even though the times have afflicted us, and you have spoiled for us the goodness with which you began; there is no way to stay together. So I carried my mother and my brother until we settled near Makkah. My brother said: I will contend with a man over water in poetry - and he was a poet - so I said: Do not do it. But stubbornness drove him until he contended with Durayd ibn al-Simmah, matching his herd against his herd. By Allah, Durayd on that day was more poetic than my brother, so they sought judgment from al-Khansa, and she ruled for my brother against Durayd, because Durayd had proposed to her to her father, and she said: An old man; I have no need of him, so she held that against him. So we joined his herd to ours, and we had a large herd. Then I came to Makkah and began at al-Safa, where there were men of Quraysh, and it had reached me that among them was a Sabian, or madman, or poet, or magician. I said: Where is this one you claim? They said: He is there where you see. I turned toward him, and by Allah, I had not gone past them the distance of a stone's throw before they fell upon me with every bone, stone, and clod, and covered me in my blood. So I came to the House and entered between the curtains and the building, and stayed there thirty days, eating and drinking nothing except Zamzam water, until on a bright moonlit night, two women from Khuza'ah came and circumambulated the House, then mentioned Isaf and Nailah - two idols they used to worship - so I stuck my head out from under the curtains and said: Load one of them upon the other. They became angry, then said: By Allah, if our men were present you would not have spoken thus. So I went out following their tracks until they met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he said: Who are you two? From whom are you? From where have you come? And what brought you? They told him the news. He said: Where did you leave the Sabian? They said: We left him between the curtains and the building. He said to them: Did he say anything to you? They said: Yes, a word that fills the mouth. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) smiled, then they slipped away, and I came forward until I reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), then I greeted him at that moment. He said: Who are you? From whom are you? From where are you? From where have you come? And what brought you? So I began to tell him the news. He said: From where did you eat and drink? I said: From Zamzam water. He said: It is indeed nourishing food. And with him was Abu Bakr, who said: O Messenger of Allah, allow me to give him dinner. He said: Yes. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out walking, and Abu Bakr took my hand until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stopped at the door of Abu Bakr, then Abu Bakr entered his house. Then he brought some raisins from the raisins of Taif, and began to throw them to us handful by handful, and we ate from them until we were full. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: O Abu Dharr. I said: At your service. He said: A land has been shown to me, a land of palm trees; I think it is none but Tihamah, so go out to your people and call them to what you have entered. He said: So I went out until I came to my mother and my brother, and told them the news, and they said: We have no aversion to the religion you entered, so we accepted Islam. Then we went out until we came to Madinah, and I informed my people, and they said: We have believed you, but we shall meet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to us, we met him. Ghifar said to him: O Messenger of Allah, Abu Dharr has told us what you told him, and we have accepted Islam and testify that you are the Messenger of Allah. Then Aslam of Khuza'ah came forward and said: O Messenger of Allah, we have desired and entered into what our brothers and allies entered. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Aslam - may Allah grant them safety - and Ghifar - may Allah forgive them. Then Abu Bakr took my hand and said: O Abu Dharr. I said: At your service, O Abu Bakr. He said: Did you used to devote yourself to worship in your pre-Islamic days? I said: Yes; you would have seen me standing at the sun, praying continuously until its heat hurt me, then falling as if a covering. He said to me: In which direction did you face? I said: I did not know except wherever Allah directed me, until Allah brought Islam to me. No one narrated it from Urwah ibn Ruwaym except Abu Tarfah Abbad ibn al-Rayyan, and no one narrated it from Abbad except al-Walid; Muhammad ibn Aidh is alone in narrating it.
