4424 - And Ibrahim ibn Abi Dawud narrated to us, Sulayman ibn Harb narrated to us, Shuba narrated to us, from Ziyad ibn Ilaqa, so he mentioned with his isnad the like of it, except he said: It was said: O Messenger of Allah, and he did not mention the Bedouins asking him. So an objector denying this hadith said: We find the servant given faith; is it permissible that good character be better than it?! Our answer to him is that good character may fall upon different things: of them softness of disposition, and of them the nature which some people praise of others, and of them religion, and of them His saying to His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): And indeed you are upon great character, i.e. upon great religion.

So that in our view - and Allah knows best - is that he reaches by good religion, even if there is not with him in it night prayer nor day fasting, what the night-prayer and day-faster reaches by night prayer and day fasting. And there was narrated from him also of what enters in this meaning.

So its meaning in our view - and Allah knows best - is that Allah only sent him to complete for people their religion, and He revealed upon him of what enters in this meaning, which is His saying: Today I completed for you your religion. So His sending him was to complete for people their religions which He had commanded those before him of His prophets with what He commanded them of them, then He completed it for him by His saying: Today I completed for you your religion. And completion is perfection; so it is the meaning of his saying (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): I was sent to perfect righteous characters, i.e. righteous religions, which is Islam. And success is from Allah.
