He said: The servant glorifies after every prayer ten times, praises ten times, and declares unity ten times — that is thirty, and they are one hundred fifty in his day and night, and with Allah, Mighty and Majestic, one thousand five hundred good deeds. And he glorifies thirty-three tasbihs, praises thirty-three tahmids, and magnifies thirty-four takbirs. Abu Jafar said: As if he means — at his sleep: that is one hundred, and with Allah, Mighty and Majestic, one thousand good deeds — so that is two thousand five hundred. Let none of you suppose he incurs in his day and night two thousand five hundred evil deeds. They said: O Messenger of Allah, why do we not guard that? He said: When one of you comes to his prayer, Satan comes and reminds him of his needs, so he rises before saying them; and when he retires to his bed, he comes to him and distracts him until he sleeps.

He said: Satan comes to one of you in his prayer and says: Remember the need of such-and-such — so he prays, and perhaps he does not glorify; and he comes to him while he is in his resting-place and puts him to sleep, and perhaps he does not glorify. Abu Jafar said: In this hadith of Abu Qurrah is the seeing of Abd Allah ibn Amr of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) counting the tasbih — and he (others) agreed with him upon that.

The worthiest thing for the practitioner to adopt, of the number after the prayers, is what is in this hadith of Ahmad — for it is what the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded after what is in the hadith of Ka'b of what he had commanded.

Abu Bishr al-Raqqi narrated to us — he said: Mu'adh ibn Mu'adh al-Anbari narrated to us, from Ibn Awn, from Uqbah ibn Suhban, who said: I said to Ibn Umar: A man glorifies and counts what he glorifies. He said: Glory be to Allah — do you reckon with Allah? Abu Jafar said: I say: every matter the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded, having a number, which cannot be fixed precisely except by counting the tasbih — counting in that is included in his command and urged to be practiced, so its doer knows he has earned the promise of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, which He promised the doers of that upon it. Every matter he commanded without mentioning a number in it — employing counting in it has no meaning; rather its employment is grave, as Abd Allah ibn Umar deemed it grave. And Allah we ask for providence.
