Chapter 308: Explanation of the difficulty in what was reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about his forbidding travelling with the Quran to the land of the enemy. 1904 - Ahmad ibn Abi Imran narrated to us, he said: Khalaf ibn Hisham al-Bazzar narrated to us, from Abu Usamah, from Ubayd Allah, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade travelling with the Quran to the land of the enemy, fearing that the enemy would get hold of it.

1905 - Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Hakam narrated to us, he said: Ishaq ibn al-Furat narrated to us, from Yahya ibn Ayyub, he said: Yahya ibn Said said: Nafi informed me that Abd Allah ibn Umar said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade travelling with the Quran to the land of the enemy, fearing that the enemy would get hold of it.

1908 - And what Yazid narrated to us, he said: Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi and Abu Salih narrated to us, they said: al-Layth ibn Sad narrated to us, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he mentioned the like of it. He said: So in this hadith was the forbidding of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to travel with the Quran to the land of the enemy, and joined to his forbidding that was fear that the enemy would get hold of it. So it was possible that this was from the speech of Ibn Umar, or from the speech of Nafi his freed slave, not from the speech of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). So we investigated that to arrive at the truth of the matter, by the success granted by Allah, mighty and majestic.

1909 - So we found that al-Muzani narrated to us, he said: al-Shafii narrated to us, he said: Sufyan narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Do not travel with the Quran to the land of the enemy, for I fear that the enemy will get hold of it. Abu Jafar said: And Ayyub in our view, and Allah knows best, is not the Ayyub from whom Shubah narrated this hadith from Nafi; rather he is Ayyub ibn Musa al-Umawi, while the one from whom Shubah narrated is Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani.

And one who supposed supposed that between Abu Ishaq al-Fazari and Ismail ibn Umayyah in this hadith was Sufyan al-Thawri, but it is not as he supposed, since we found it in other than the narration of Muawiyah, from Abu Ishaq, just as in the narration of Muawiyah, from Abu Ishaq.

1911 - As Muhammad ibn Sinan al-Shayzari narrated to us, he said: al-Musayyib ibn Wadih narrated to us, he said: Abu Ishaq al-Fazari narrated to us, from Ismail ibn Umayyah and Layth ibn Abi Sulaym, then he mentioned the rest of the hadith. And we accepted al-Musayyib in this hadith, even though the people of knowledge of isnad criticize him, so that it be verified that there is no intruder between Abu Ishaq and Ismail in this chain. And what is in these hadiths of Ayyub ibn Musa and Ismail ibn Umayyah and Layth ibn Abi Sulaym established with us that the fear expressed in these hadiths for the Quran, that the enemy would get hold of it so that travelling with it to their land was forbidden because of it, is from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), not from anyone else among the narrators of these hadiths.
