Chapter 138 - Explanation of the problematic content in the Book of Allah Most High, where mercy is mentioned with 'wind' and 'winds,' and what is reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) indicating the preferred of those two readings. Narrated to us by Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz, narrated to us by Abu Ubayd who said: The reading we follow for wind and winds is that what is of mercy is plural, and what is of punishment is singular. He said: The basis by which we considered this reading is the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that when the wind blew he would say: O Allah, make them winds and do not make it a wind. What Abu Ubayd related from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has no basis. It would have been more fitting for him, given his high rank and truthfulness in narration, other than this hadith, not to attribute to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) what the people of hadith knowledge do not know from him. Then we considered what is in the Book of Allah indicating the correct view on this meaning, and found Allah said in His Book: He it is who enables you to travel on land and sea, until when you are in ships and they sail with them by a pleasant wind and they rejoice in it, there comes to it a stormy wind and waves come to them from every place. The pleasant wind from Allah was mercy, and the stormy wind from Him, Mighty and Majestic, was punishment. In that is proof of the invalidity of what Abu Ubayd narrated as we mentioned from him. May Allah forgive him. Then we considered what is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entering into this meaning.
