2747 - Ibn Marzuq narrated to us, he said: al-Qa'nabi narrated to us, he said: Malik narrated to us. 2748 - And Yunus narrated to us, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, that Malik informed him, from Ibn Shihab, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to walk in front of the funeral, and Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, and the caliphs, successively, to our day this. Abu Ja'far said: So a group went to that walking in front of the funeral is best than walking behind it, and they argued in that with these reports. And others opposed them in that and said: Walking behind it is best than walking in front of it. And among the proof for them against the people of the first view was that the hadith of Ibn Uyaynah which we mentioned at the beginning of this chapter, he narrated it from al-Zuhri, from Salim, from his father, he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Abu Bakr and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, walking in front of the funeral, so it became a report from Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, of what he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Abu Bakr and Umar and Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them, doing thereof. And it is possible they were doing something, while other than it was in their view best, by way of latitude; as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed ablution once once, while ablution twice twice is best than it, and ablution thrice thrice is best than all that, but he did what he did thereof by way of latitude. Then all the companions of al-Zuhri besides him opposed Ibn Uyaynah in the chain of this hadith; so Malik narrated it from al-Zuhri, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to walk in front of the funeral, so he severed it. Then Uqayl and Yunus narrated it, from Ibn Shihab, from Salim, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Abu Bakr and Umar and Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them, used to walk in front of the funeral. This is its meaning though its wording be not likewise, because the origin of his hadith is only from Salim; he said: Abdullah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, used to walk in front of the funeral, and likewise were the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Abu Bakr and Umar and Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them. So all this speech in this hadith is only from Salim, not from Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, so it became a severed hadith, and in the hadith of Yahya ibn Ayyub, from Uqayl: And likewise is the sunnah in following the funeral, an addition upon what is in the hadith of al-Layth and Salamah, from Uqayl; so likewise also there is no proof therein, because it is only from the speech of Salim, or from the speech of al-Zuhri. And there has been narrated from Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, of what we shall narrate in its place of this chapter, God willing. And the companions of the first view said: And there has been narrated from a group of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that they used to walk in front of the funeral. And they mentioned what.
