While the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was like that, Hilal ibn Umayyah al-Waqifi came, one of the three to whom Allah turned in forgiveness, and said: O Messenger of Allah, I came last night at evening time from a garden of mine where I had been, and I saw a man with my wife; I saw with my own eyes and heard with my own ears. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) disliked what he brought, and it was said: Will Hilal be flogged and his testimony among the Muslims rendered void? So Hilal said: O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I see in your face that you dislike what I have brought, but I hope Allah will make a way out. He said: While the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was like that, revelation descended upon him; and when revelation descended upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), his body and face would change for that, and his Companions would hold back from him and none of them would speak to him. When the revelation was lifted, he said: Rejoice, O Hilal. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Call her. So she was called, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, knows that one of you is lying, so is either of you repentant? Hilal said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I have said nothing but the truth, and I have spoken the truth. He said: At that she said: He has lied. He said: It was said to Hilal: Will you testify four testimonies by Allah that you are among the truthful? And at the fifth it was said to him: O Hilal, fear Allah, for the punishment of Allah is severer than the punishment of people, and this is the decisive one that makes the punishment due upon you. He said: By Allah, Allah will never punish me for it, just as He did not have me flogged for it. So he testified the fifth that the curse of Allah be upon him if he were among the liars. And it was said to her: Testify four testimonies by Allah that he is among the liars, and at the fifth it was said to her: O woman, fear Allah, for the punishment of Allah is severer than the punishment of people, and this is the decisive one that makes the punishment due upon you. She hesitated for a while, then said: By Allah, I will not disgrace my people, so she testified the fifth that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he were among the truthful. He said: And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) decreed that neither she nor her child be accused, and whoever accuses her or her child will be flogged with the prescribed punishment; and she has no maintenance nor lodging due from him, because they separate without divorce and without his having died leaving her a widow. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Watch her; if she bears him thick-haired, fair, bow-legged, thin-shanked, then he is the son of Hilal ibn Umayyah, and if she bears him thick-shanked, full-buttocked, dark, curly-haired, camel-like, then he belongs to her companion. He said: She bore him dark, curly-haired, camel-like, thick-shanked, full-buttocked. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Were it not for the oaths, there would have been between me and her a matter. Abbad said: I heard Ikrimah saying: I saw him as a governor of one of the garrison towns, with his father unknown.
