2293 - Abu Dawud narrated to us, he said: Kharijah ibn Mus'ab al-Duba'i narrated to us, he said: Zayd ibn Aslam, the freedman of Umar ibn al-Khattab, narrated to us, from Ata ibn Yasar, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, that some people said in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): O Messenger of Allah, shall we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Do you suffer any harm - Abu Dawud said: meaning, do you doubt - in seeing the sun at midday on a clear day with no clouds in it? They said: No. He said: Do you suffer any harm in seeing the moon on the night of the full moon on a clear night with no clouds in it? They said: No, O Messenger of Allah. He said: You will suffer no more harm in seeing Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, on the Day of Resurrection than in seeing either of them. When it is the Day of Resurrection, a caller will call: Every nation followed what it used to worship, and none remains who used to worship other than Allah, of idols and divining arrows, but they will fall into the Fire, until none remains except those who worshipped Allah, righteous or wicked, and the remnants of the People of the Book. It will be said: What did you worship? They will say: We worshipped Uzayr the son of Allah. It will be said: You have lied; Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has taken neither wife nor son. What do you seek? They will say: Our Lord, we are thirsty, give us to drink. They will be motioned to: Will you not come to water? Hell will be raised before them as though a mirage, its parts crushing one another, until they fall into the Fire. Then the Christians will be called and it will be said to them: What did you worship? They will say: We worshipped the Messiah the son of Allah. It will be said: You have lied; Allah has taken neither wife nor son. What do you seek? They will say: Our Lord, we are thirsty, give us to drink. They will be motioned to: Will you not come to water? Hell will be raised before them as though a mirage, its parts crushing one another, until they fall into the Fire, until none remains except those who worshipped Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, righteous or wicked. The Lord of the worlds will come to them and say: What are you waiting for? Every nation has followed what it used to worship. They will say: We parted from people in this world and did not keep their company; we are waiting for our Lord whom we worshipped. He will say: Is there between you and your Lord a sign by which you know Him? They will say: Yes. Then the shin will be uncovered, and none remains who used to prostrate to Allah willingly in this world but he will be permitted to prostrate, and none remains who used to prostrate for show or hypocrisy but his back will become a single slab; whenever he tries to prostrate he will fall on his back. He said: Then they will raise their heads and He will say: I am your Lord. They will say: You are our Lord. The bridge will be laid and intercession permitted, and he will say: My Lord, grant safety, grant safety. The believers will pass over the bridge. It was said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the bridge? He said: Slippery and sliding, and on it are hooks, clamps, and a flattened thorn with a hooked thorn called al-sa'dan. The believers will pass like the blink of an eye, like lightning, like wind, like fine horses and mounts: one saved and secure, one scratched and released, one heaped into the Fire. When the believers escape the Fire, then by the One in Whose Hand is my soul, you are not more insistent in asking me for the truth than the believers in Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, pleading for their brothers in the Fire. They will say: Our Lord, our brothers who used to pray with us, fast with us, and perform Hajj with us. He will say: Go, and whomever you recognize by his face, bring him out. Their images will be made forbidden to the Fire. They will go and bring them out, the Fire having taken a man up to his ankles and up to the middle of his shins. They will bring out a great multitude, then return and say: Our Lord, we have left in the Fire none of those whom You commanded us to bring out. He will say: Return, and whomever you find in his heart a dinar's weight of good, bring him out. They will go and bring out a great multitude, then return and say: We have left in the Fire none of those whom You commanded us to bring out. He will say: Return, and whomever you find in his heart half a mithqal of good, bring him out. They will return and bring out a great multitude, then return and say: We have left in the Fire none of those whom You commanded us to bring out except we brought him out. He will say: Return, and whomever you find in his heart an atom's weight of good, bring him out. They will go and bring out a great multitude, then return and say: We have left in the Fire none of those whom You commanded us to bring out except we brought him out - and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri used to say: If you do not believe this hadith, then recite this verse: {Indeed Allah does not wrong even an atom's weight} - the verse - then He, the Mighty and Majestic, will say: The angels have interceded, the prophets have interceded, and the believers have interceded, and none remains but the Most Merciful of the merciful. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will take a handful from the Fire and bring out of it people who never did any good at all, having become charred. They will be cast into a river at the mouths of Paradise called the River of Life. They will come out of their decayed state as a seed comes out of flood-borne debris - have you not seen how what is toward the tree and the stone is green or yellow, and what of it is in the shade is white? They said: O Messenger of Allah, it is as though you used to graze in the desert! They will come out like pearls, with seals on their necks. It will be said: These are the freed ones of Allah, brought out of the Fire without any deed they did nor any good they sent forth. It will be said: Enter Paradise; whatever you see of anything is yours. They will say: Our Lord, You have given us what You gave none of the worlds. He will say: You have with Me what is better than this? They will say: O Lord, what is better than this? He will say: My pleasure; I shall never be angry with you after it.
