Abu Dawud narrated to us, he said: Hisham narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Anas, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: The believers shall be gathered on the Day of Resurrection and become anxious about that. They shall say: If only we sought intercession with our Lord Almighty so He relieves us from this place of ours. So they shall come to Adam, peace be upon him, and say: O Adam, you are the father of mankind; Allah created you with His Hand, made His angels prostrate to you, and taught you the names of all things; intercede for us with our Lord so He relieves us from this place of ours. He shall say: I am not fit for that - and he shall mention to them the sin he committed - but go to Nuh, the first Messenger Allah sent to the earth. So they shall come to Nuh, and he shall say: I am not fit for that - and he shall mention to them the sin he committed - but go to Ibrahim, the close friend of the Most Merciful, peace be upon him. So they shall come to Ibrahim, and he shall say: I am not fit for that - and he shall mention to them sins he committed - but go to Musa, peace be upon him, a servant to whom Allah gave the Torah and spoke to directly. So they shall come to Musa, peace be upon him, and he shall say: I am not fit for that - and he shall mention to them the sin he committed - but go to Isa, peace be upon him, the servant of Allah and His Messenger, His Word and His Spirit. So they shall come to Isa, and he shall say: I am not fit for that, but go to Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), a servant whom Allah has forgiven his past and future sins. So they shall come to me, and I shall proceed and seek permission from my Lord, and permission shall be granted to me. When I see my Lord Blessed and Exalted I shall fall prostrate, and He shall leave me as long as He wills to leave me. Then it shall be said: Raise your head, Muhammad; speak and you shall be heard, ask and you shall be given, intercede and your intercession shall be accepted. So I shall praise my Lord with praises He teaches me, then I shall intercede, and a limit shall be set for me, and I shall admit them to Paradise. Then I shall return, and when I see my Lord I shall fall prostrate to Him, and He shall leave me as long as Allah wills to leave me. Until I return and say: O Lord, none remains in the Fire except those detained by the Quran - that is, those upon whom eternity is due.
