Narrated to us al-Husayn ibn Mahdi, he said: al-Hajjaj ibn Nusayr informed us, he said: told us Warqa, from Amr ibn Dinar, from Ata ibn Yasar, from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed ablution once each and combined sniffing and rinsing with one handful. And we only gathered these hadiths to clarify each one's addition over his companion in speech and in act, though their meanings are close to one another; and the case belongs to the one who adds, when he is trustworthy. As for the hadith of Ibn Idris, he added wiping the outer and inner ears, and we do not know anyone who said this from Ibn Abbas other than him. As for the hadith of Qabisah, that he performed ablution and sprinkled, he erred in it: it was only that he sprinkled his feet, but he carried it as sprinkling the private part since he abbreviated it. As for the hadith of Hisham ibn Sa'd, we do not know anyone who followed him in its wording; and Hisham is trustworthy. And this, in my view — and Allah knows best — was only that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) showed them the ablution, or he was performing ablution and wiped, saying: do like this, so wash; because reports have been established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he washed his feet. As for the hadith of Abu Amr al-Asqalani, Muhammad ibn Marzuq erred in it in my view, for Ibn Raja narrates from Abu Amr Sa'id ibn Salamah many hadiths; and Abu Amr al-Asqalani — we do not know him. And the hadith is the meaning of the hadiths, though the wording differs from that. As for the hadith of Warqa, we do not know anyone who narrated it as Hajjaj narrated it, for others besides Hajjaj — it reached me that he narrates it from Zayd ibn Aslam; while Hajjaj said: from Warqa, from Amr ibn Dinar, from Ata ibn Yasar. And we do not know that Amr ibn Dinar reported from Ata, from Ibn Abbas, any hadith.
