2671 — Ya'qub ibn Nasr narrated to us, he said: Abd al-Hamid ibn Bahram informed us, he said: Shahr ibn Hawshab informed us, he said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Ghanm narrated to me, from the account of al-Harith ibn Umayrah, that he came with Mu'adh from Yemen and stayed with him in his house and dwelling, and the plague struck them: Mu'adh, Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, Shurahbil ibn Hasanah, and Abu Malik were all struck on one day. Amr ibn al-As, when he sensed the plague, fled in great fear and said: O people, disperse in these ravines, for there has descended upon you a matter from Allah's decree which I see only as punishment and plague. Shurahbil ibn Hasanah said to him: You lie; we accompanied the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while you are more astray than your family's donkey. Amr said: You speak truth. Mu'adh ibn Jabal said to Amr ibn al-As: You lie; it is not plague nor punishment, but the mercy of your Lord, the supplication of your Prophet, and the taking of the righteous. O Allah, grant the family of Mu'adh the fullest share of this mercy. He said: Evening did not come before his son Abd al-Rahman — the dearest of creation to him, by whom he was kunya'd — was struck. Mu'adh returned from the mosque and found him distressed, and said: O Abd al-Rahman, how are you? He answered him, saying: O my father, {The truth is from your Lord, so be not of the doubters}. Mu'adh said: And we, Allah willing, you will find me of the patient. He died that night and was buried the next day. Mu'adh ibn Jabal kept sending al-Harith ibn Umayrah to Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah asking how he was; Abu Ubaydah showed him his plague-boil on his palm, and al-Harith ibn Umayrah wept and feared it when he saw it; Abu Ubaydah swore by Allah he would not love to have red camels in its place. He said: Al-Harith returned to Mu'adh and found him unconscious; al-Harith wept and made others weep. Then Mu'adh recovered and said: O son of al-Humayriyyah, why do you weep over me? I seek refuge in Allah from you. Al-Harith said: By Allah, I do not weep over you. Mu'adh said: Then over what do you weep? He said: I weep over what I shall miss of you — the two late-afternoon times of going and returning. Mu'adh said: Seat me; so he seated him in his lap and said: Hear from me, for I enjoin upon you a bequest: that which you weep over of your going and returning — knowledge is situated between the two boards of the mushaf; if its interpretation eludes you, seek it after me from three: Uwaymir Abu al-Darda, or Salman al-Farisi, or Ibn Umm Abd. And I warn you of the slip of the scholar and the disputation of the hypocrite. Then the death-throes intensified upon Mu'adh, throes none had suffered; whenever he recovered from a swoon he opened his glance and said: Choke me with Your choking, for by Your might, You know that I love You. He said: When he fulfilled his term, al-Harith went to Abu al-Darda in Hims and stayed with him as long as Allah willed, then al-Harith said: My brother Mu'adh enjoined me to you, to Salman al-Farisi, and to Ibn Umm Abd, and I see myself departing to Iraq. He came to Kufah and attended the مجلس of Ibn Umm Abd morning and evening; one day in the مجلس Ibn Umm Abd said: Who are you? I said: A man of the people of Sham. Ibn Umm Abd said: Good folk are the people of Sham, but for one thing. Al-Harith said: What is that one thing? He said: That they testify of themselves that they are of the people of Paradise. He said: Al-Harith said istirja' twice or thrice and said: Mu'adh spoke truth when he told me. Ibn Umm Abd said: And what did he say, O son of my brother? He said: He warned me of the slip of the scholar; by Allah, you, O Ibn Mas'ud, are but one of two men: either a man upon certainty testifying that there is no god but Allah — then you are of the people of Paradise — or a doubting man who does not know where his abode is. Ibn Mas'ud said: My brother spoke truth; it was a slip, so do not hold me for it. Ibn Mas'ud took al-Harith's hand and went with him to his lodging, and he stayed with him as long as Allah willed. Then al-Harith said: I must visit Abu Abdullah Salman al-Farisi in al-Mada'in. Al-Harith went to Salman in al-Mada'in, and when he greeted him he said: Stay where you are till I come out to you. Al-Harith said: By Allah, I do not think you know me, O Abu Abdullah. He said: Yes indeed; my spirit knew your spirit before I knew you: spirits with Allah are marshalled troops — those that recognize one another unite, and those that disown one another besides Allah differ. He stayed with him as long as Allah willed, then returned to Sham. Those were the ones who knew one another for Allah and visited one another for Allah.
