2655 — Salamah ibn Shabib narrated to us, he said: Bistam ibn Khalid al-Harrani informed us, he said: Nasr ibn Abdullah Abu al-Fath informed us, from Thawr ibn Yazid, from Khalid ibn Ma'dan, from Mu'adh ibn Jabal, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whoever among you prays at night, let him raise his voice in his recitation; for the angels pray with his prayer and listen to his recitation, and the believing jinn who are in the air, and his neighbors with him in his dwelling, pray with his prayer and listen to his recitation; and he drives away by the loudness of his recitation from his house and the houses around him the dissolute jinn and the rebellious devils; and the house in which the Qur'an is recited is covered by a tent of light by which the people of heaven are guided as they are guided by the brilliant star in the depths of the seas and in the barren land; and when the companion of the Qur'an dies, that tent is lifted, and the angels look from heaven and do not see that light, so the angels announce his death from heaven to heaven, and the angels pray over his spirit among the spirits; then the angels meet the two guardian angels who were with him, then the angels seek forgiveness for him until the day he is raised; and there is no man who learns the Book of Allah then prays an hour of the night except that the past night enjoins upon the coming night to wake him at his hour and to be light upon him; and when he dies, while his family are preparing him, the Qur'an comes in a fine, beautiful form standing at his head until he is wrapped in his shrouds, and the Qur'an is upon his chest beneath the shroud; and when he is placed in his grave and it is leveled over him and his companions disperse from him, Munkar and Nakir come to him and seat him in his grave, and the Qur'an comes until it is between him and them, and they say to him: Stand aside so we may question him; and it says: No, by the Lord of the Ka'bah, he is my companion and my friend, and I shall not forsake him in any state; if you were commanded with something, proceed to what you were commanded and leave me in my place, for I shall not part from him until I enter him into Paradise, Allah willing; then the Qur'an looks at its companion and says to him: Be still, for you will find me among neighbors a truthful neighbor, among friends a truthful friend, and among companions a truthful companion; and he says to it: Who are you? And it says: I am the Qur'an which you used to recite aloud and conceal, and you used to love me, so I am your beloved; whomever I love, Allah loves him; there is upon you after the questioning of Munkar and Nakir no grief, nor care, nor sorrow; so Munkar and Nakir question him and ascend, and he and the Qur'an remain; and it says: I shall surely spread for you a soft bed and cover you with a fine, beautiful covering as recompense for your keeping your night wakeful and tiring your day; he said: Then the Qur'an ascends to heaven quicker than a blink and asks Allah that for him, and Allah gives him that; then there descend with it a million of those brought near from the sixth heaven, and the Qur'an comes to him and says: Have you felt lonely? I have not ceased since I parted from you until I spoke to Allah, blessed and exalted, and brought out for you from Him a bed, a covering, and a lamp, and I have come to you with it; so rise until the angels spread for you; he said: So the angels raise him with a gentle raising, then his grave is widened for him the distance of four hundred years' journey; then there is placed for him a bed whose lining is of green silk stuffed with aromatic musk, and there are placed for him cushions at his feet and head of sundus and istabraq, and two lamps of the light of Paradise are lit for him at his head and feet shining until the Day of Resurrection; then the angels lay him on his right side facing the qiblah; then jasmine of the jasmine of Paradise is brought, and they ascend from him, and he and the Qur'an remain; and the Qur'an takes the jasmine and places it upon his nose fresh, and he inhales it until he is raised; and the Qur'an returns to his family and informs them of his news every day and night, and tends to him as the compassionate father tends to his child with news; if one of his children learns the Qur'an, it gives him glad tidings of that, and if his offspring are evil offspring, it supplicates for them for righteousness and devotion, or as was mentioned. And this hadith we do not know to be narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) with this wording except through this channel; and Khalid ibn Ma'dan did not hear from Mu'adh; we only mentioned it because we did not preserve it from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) except through this channel, so for that we mentioned it; and it is the reward of the Qur'an that comes, and the proof of that is that it is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): That a morsel or a piece of bread comes on the Day of Resurrection like Uhud — and it is its reward that comes; so everything of that narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) of what will be in the Hereafter, it is the reward.
