2090 - Amr ibn Ali narrated to us, he said: Affan narrated to me, he wrote it with his hand and read it to me, he said: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, he said: Thabit informed us, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from Suhayb, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: There was a king among those before you who entrusted a boy of his to a magician who taught him magic; between the magician and the king was a monk. The boy came upon the monk and heard his speech and liked his manner and speech. When he came to the magician he would say: What kept you? He would say: My family kept me; when he came to his family he sat with the monk and was late, and when he came to his family they beat him. He complained to the monk, who said: When the magician wants to beat you say: my family kept me; when your family wants to beat you say: the magician kept me. While thus, one day he came upon a terrible huge beast that had blocked the people so they could not pass. He said: Today I will know whether the monk is more beloved to Allah or the magician. He said: O Allah, if the monk's affair is more beloved - more pleasing - to You than the magician's, kill this beast so people may pass. He threw at it and killed it, and the people went on. He informed the monk of that, who said: You are better than me; you will be tested, and if tested do not point to me. The boy used to cure the blind and the leper. There was a companion of the king, a man who sat with him, who became blind; he heard of him - meaning the boy - and came to him with many gifts and said: Heal me. He said: I do not heal anyone; if you believe in Allah I will call upon Allah and He will heal you. He believed, he called upon Allah and He healed him. Then he came to the king - meaning the man he used to visit - and sat as before. The king said to him: Who returned your sight? He said: My Lord. He said: I am your lord? He said: No, but my Lord is Allah. He said: Do you have a lord besides me? He said: Yes. He kept torturing him until he pointed to the boy; he sent for him and said: Your magic has reached healing the blind and leper? He said: I do not heal anyone; none heals but Allah. He said: Do you have a lord besides me? He said: Yes, my Lord and your Lord is Allah. He seized him too with torture until he pointed to the monk; the monk was brought and told: Return from your religion, but he refused, so a saw was placed on the parting of his head until its halves fell to the ground. He said to the blind man: Return from your religion, but he refused, so a saw was placed on the parting of his head until its halves fell to the ground. He said to the boy: Return from your religion, but he refused, so he sent him with men to such-and-such mountain and said: When you reach it with him, if he returns from his religion, else hurl him from it. They took him up the mountain and he said: O Allah, suffice me against them however You will; the mountain shook with them. The boy came walking to the king, who said: What happened to your companions? He said: Allah sufficed me against them. He sent him with others to the sea and said: If he returns from his religion, else drown him; they took him out to sea, and the boy said: O Allah, suffice me against them however You will; they all drowned. The boy came walking to the king, who said: What happened to your companions? He said: Allah sufficed me against them. Then he said to the king: You cannot kill me until you do what I command; if you do what I command you will kill me, else you cannot kill me. He said: What is it? He said: Gather the people on one plain, crucify me on a trunk, take an arrow from my quiver, then say: In the name of Allah, Lord of the boy; if you do that you will kill me. He said: He placed the arrow in the bow's notch, shot it and said: In the name of Allah, Lord of the boy; the arrow fell on his temple, the boy placed his hand on the arrow's spot and died. The people said: We believe in the Lord of the boy. It was said to the king: What you feared has, by Allah, befallen you; all the people have believed. He ordered the mouths of the roads, trenches were dug there and fires kindled, and said: Whoever returns from his religion leave him, else hurl him in. They were falling into it; a woman came with her nursing infant and seemed to hesitate to fall in, so the infant said to her: O mother, be patient, for you are upon the truth.
