206 - Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Junayd narrated to us, he said: Yaqub ibn Ibrahim ibn Sad narrated to us, he said: My father narrated to me, from Salih ibn Kaysan, from Ibn Shihab, that Ubaydullah ibn Abi Thawr narrated to him from Abdullah ibn Abbas, he said: I remained keen to ask Umar about the two women of the wives of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to whom it was said: If you both turn to Allah, your hearts have inclined - until I went out with him; he alighted one day, and I turned aside with him with the water-vessel, and he relieved himself, then came, and I poured upon his hands and he performed ablution. So I said: O Commander of the Faithful, who are the two women of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to whom it was said: If you both turn to Allah, your hearts have inclined? He said: How strange of you, O Ibn Abbas - she is Hafsa and Aisha. Then Umar proceeded with the hadith, driving it, saying: I used to stay with a clan of the Ansar, or with a house of the Ansar, of Banu Umayya ibn Zayd; and we used to take turns staying - he would stay one day and I would stay one day. When I stayed, I would bring him the news of my day of what came down of revelation and other than it; and when he stayed, he would do the like of that. And we, the company of Quraysh, used to dominate women. When we came to the Ansar, there were a people dominated by their women, so our women began taking from the manners of the women of the Ansar. So I shouted at my wife and she answered me back; I disapproved that she answered me back, so she said: Why do you disapprove that I answer you back - by Allah, the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) answer him back, and one of them forsakes him the day until the night. That weighed heavily upon me, so I said: Whoever of them does that has failed. So I gathered my garments and entered upon Hafsa bint Umar, saying to her: O Hafsa, does one of you anger the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) until the night? She said: Yes. I said: You have failed and lost. Do you feel secure that Allah Almighty may anger for the anger of His Messenger and you perish - do not vie with, or do not rival, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), nor answer him back in anything, nor forsake him; and ask me whatever occurs to you; and let not your neighbor deceive you - if she is fairer than you and more beloved to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) - meaning: Aisha. Umar said: And we used to talk that Ghassan were shoeing horses to raid us. He said: So my Ansari companion alighted on the day of his turn, returned to me in the evening, knocked my door violently, then said: Is he asleep? He said: So I was startled and went out to him. He said: A great matter has occurred. I said: What is it? Has Ghassan come? He said: Rather greater than that - the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) divorced his wives. So I said: Hafsa has failed and lost; I thought this was about to be. So I gathered my garments and performed Fajr prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered a loft of his in which he secludes himself. He said: So I entered upon Hafsa while she was weeping. I said: What is the matter with you? Tell me your news - has the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) divorced you? She said: I do not know; here he is, secluded in this loft. So I went out until I came to the pulpit, and there was a group weeping, some of them. So I sat with them a while, then what I felt overcame me, so I came to the loft in which was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said to a black servant of his: Seek permission for Umar ibn al-Khattab. He said: So the servant entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), then the servant went out to me and said: I mentioned you, and he was silent. So I left and went until I sat with the group at the pulpit. Then what I felt overcame me, so I said to the servant: Seek permission for Umar ibn al-Khattab. So he entered, then returned to me and said: I mentioned you to him, and he was silent. He said: So I returned and sat with the group at the pulpit. Then what I felt overcame me, so I came and said to the servant: Seek permission for Umar. So he entered, then went out to me and said: I mentioned you to him, and he was silent. When I turned to leave, the servant called me, saying: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has permitted you. So I entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he was reclining upon the strands of a mat with nothing between him and it; the strands of the mat had marked his side, reclining upon a cushion of leather stuffed with fiber. So I greeted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), saying while standing: O Messenger of Allah, have you divorced your wives? He said: So he raised his sight to me and said: No. So I said: Allah is Greatest - while standing: O Messenger of Allah, had you seen me - we, the company of Quraysh, used to dominate women; when we came to Madina, we came upon a people dominated by their women. So I became angry at my wife, and she answered me back, and I disapproved that of her. She said: Do you disapprove that I answer you back - by Allah, the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) answer him back, and one of them forsakes him until the night. He said: I said: Hafsa has failed and lost; does one of them feel secure that Allah may anger upon her for the anger of His Messenger, and she perishes? He said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) smiled. He said: So I said: Had you seen me when I entered upon Hafsa and said to her: Let not your neighbor deceive you - if she is more beautiful than you and more beloved to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) - meaning: Aisha. So he smiled another smile. He said: So I sat until I saw him smile. Then I raised my sight in his house; by Allah, I saw nothing to return the sight except three hides. He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, supplicate Allah to widen for your nation, for Persia and Rome have been widened for and given the world, though they do not worship Allah. He said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sat upright, having been reclining, and said: Are you in doubt, O son of al-Khattab - those are a people whose good things were hastened for them in the life of the world. So I said: O Messenger of Allah, seek forgiveness for me. He said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) withdrew from his wives because of that talk. Aisha said: And he had said: I shall not enter upon you for a month, due to the severity of his displeasure (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when Allah informed him their talk. When twenty-nine had passed, he entered upon Aisha, beginning with her. Aisha said to him: You had sworn, O Messenger of Allah, not to enter upon us for a month, and we have reached twenty-nine nights, counting them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to her: The month is twenty-nine nights. Aisha said: So Allah revealed the choice; he began with me, the first woman of his wives, saying: I present to you an affair - do not hasten in it until you consult your parents. And he knew my parents would not command me to part from him. She said: So I said: And what is it? He said: Allah said: O Prophet, say to your wives: If you desire the life of the world and its adornment, come, I shall provide for you and release you a fair release; and if you desire Allah and His Messenger. She said: So I said: In which of this shall I consult my parents - why did you not present this to one older than me of your wives? She said: He said: Rather you. She said: So I said: Before consulting my parents, I desire Allah, His Messenger and the abode of the Hereafter. He said: And it is said Aisha said: I am pleased with Allah and His Messenger in hardship and ease. Aisha said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered upon his wives and gave them the choice; they were upon one word as Aisha said.
