Abu Hammam narrated to us, Awbad narrated to us, from his father, from Ibn Babanus who said: I entered with two other men upon Aisha, Mother of the Believers, and a man among us said to her: O Mother of the Believers, what do you say about intercourse during menstruation? She said: What is intercourse? Is it menstruation? He said: Yes. She said: It is menstruation as Allah named it. She said: When that was the case, I would wrap my waist-wrapper, and for him was what is above the wrapper. She began narrating to us, saying: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) never passed my door a day without saying a word that delighted my eye. She said: One day he passed and did not speak to me, and passed the next day and did not speak to me, and passed the next day and did not speak to me, and passed the next day and did not speak to me. I said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is angry with me over something. She said: So I bound my head, made my face pale, cast a pillow facing the house door, and leaned upon it. She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed, looked at me, and said: What is with you, O Aisha? She said: O Messenger of Allah, I complained and have a headache. He said, saying: Rather, alas my head. She said: I remained only a little until he was brought carried in a cloak. She said: So I nursed him, never having nursed a sick person nor seen a dead person. She said: He raised his head, so I took it and leaned it upon my chest. She said: Usama ibn Zayd entered with a moist arak siwak in his hand. She said: He glanced at it. She said: I thought he wanted it, so I took it, softened it with my mouth, and handed it to him. She said: He took it and raised it to his mouth. She said: His hand trembled and it fell from his hand. Then he turned his face to me until his mouth was at my mouth; a cold drop flowed from his mouth, my skin shivered from it, and the scent of musk rose in my face. His head inclined, and I thought he had fainted. She said: I took him, laid him upon the bed, and covered his face. She said: My father Abu Bakr entered and said: How do you see him? I said: He has fainted. He drew near, uncovered his face, and said: O fainting, how unlike fainting this is. Then he uncovered his face and recognized death, saying: To Allah we belong and to Him we return. Then he wept. I said: For Allah's sake, the cessation of revelation and Jibril entering my house. Then he placed his hands upon his temples and his mouth upon his forehead, and wept until his tears flowed upon the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then he covered his face and went out to the people weeping, saying: O community of Muslims, does any among you have a covenant about the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)? They said: No. Then he turned to Umar and said: O Umar, do you have a covenant about the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)? He said: No. He said: By He besides whom there is no god, he has tasted death; and he said to them: I am dead and you are dead. The people clamored and wept bitterly. Then they left him to his household. Ali ibn Abi Talib washed him, with Usama ibn Zayd pouring water over him. Ali said: I did not forget anything of him I had not washed except it was turned for me until I saw another and washed him without seeing another, until I finished him. Then they shrouded him in a red Yemeni cloak and two wraps that had been used then washed. Then he was laid upon the bed, permission given to people, and they entered upon him group by group praying over him without an imam, until none remained in Medina, free nor slave, except prayed over him. Then they disputed about his burial, where he should be buried. Some said: By the staff he held in his hand, beneath his minbar. Some said: In al-Baqi, where he buried his dead. They said: We shall not do that, lest a servant or slave girl of one of you angered by his master seek refuge at his grave as a practice. Their view settled that he be buried in his house beneath his bed where his soul was taken. When Abu Bakr died, he was buried with him. When death came to Umar ibn al-Khattab, he counseled, saying: When I die, carry me to the door of Aisha's house and say to her: This is Umar ibn al-Khattab greeting you with peace, saying: Shall I enter or go out? He said: She was silent a while, then said: Admit him and bury him with him; Abu Bakr at his right and Umar at his left. She said: When Umar was buried, I took the jilbab and wrapped myself in it. He said: It was said to her: What is with you and the jilbab? She said: This was my husband, and this was my father; when Umar was buried, I wrapped myself.
