Hadith of Halima bint al-Harith, mother of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). 1 - Masruq ibn al-Marzuban al-Kufi and al-Hasan ibn Hammad narrated to us, and I copied it from the hadith of Masruq, Yahya ibn Zakariya ibn Za'ida narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, from Jahm ibn Abi Jahm, from Abdullah ibn Ja'far, from Halima bint al-Harith, mother of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), al-Sa'diyya who nursed him, she said: I went out among women of Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr seeking nursing infants in Makka, upon a grey she-donkey of mine that had grown weak, crowding with the caravan. She said: We went out in a barren year that left nothing, with my husband al-Harith ibn Abd al-Uzza. She said: With us was an old she-camel of ours that would not yield a drop of milk, and with me was a boy of mine; we could not sleep our night with his crying, for my breast had nothing to suffice him, and our old camel had no milk to feed him, except that we hoped. When we reached Makka, every woman among us was offered the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and refused him, for we hoped for generous nursing payment from the father of the child, and he was an orphan, so we said: What could his mother do? Until no woman of my companions remained but took a boy other than me, and I disliked returning without taking anything while my companions had taken. I said to my husband: By Allah, I will return to that one and take him. She said: So I came to him, took him, and brought him to my dwelling. My husband said: Have you taken him? I said: Yes, by Allah, since I found no other. He said: You did right; perhaps Allah will place good in him. She said: By Allah, as soon as I placed him in my lap, my breast flowed with milk for him as He willed. She said: He drank until satisfied, and his brother, meaning her son, drank until satisfied, and my husband went to our old camel at night and found it full, so he milked for us as we wished, and he drank until satisfied. She said: And I drank until satisfied. We spent that night in good, full and quenched, and our boys slept. She said: His father, meaning her husband, said: By Allah, O Halima, I think you have taken a blessed soul; our boy has slept and is satisfied. She said: Then we left, and by Allah, my she-donkey went ahead of the caravan and outstripped them so they could not reach her, so they said: Woe to you, O daughter of al-Harith, hold back for us; is this not your donkey you left upon? I said: Yes, by Allah, and she is ahead of us, until we reached our dwellings among Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr, arriving upon the most barren land of Allah. By Him in whose hand is Halima's soul, they would send out their sheep in the morning, and my shepherd would go out, and my sheep would return with full bellies, milky and udder-full, while their sheep returned hungry and perishing, with no milk. She said: We drank milk as we wished, while no one in the settlement milked a drop or found it. They said to their shepherds: Woe to you, do you not pasture where Halima's shepherd pastures? They would pasture in the valley where our shepherd pastured, yet their sheep returned hungry with no milk, while my sheep returned milky and full. She said: He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would grow in a day as a boy grows in a month, and grow in a month as a boy grows in a year, until he reached six as a sturdy boy. She said: We came to his mother, and we said to her, and his father said to her: Return our son to us; let us return with him, for we fear the epidemic of Makka for him. She said: While we clung to him most for the blessing we had seen. She said: He kept at her until she said: Return with him. So we returned with him, and he stayed with us two months. She said: While he was playing with his brother one day behind the houses, grazing our lambs, his brother came to us running and said to me and his father: Reach my Qurayshi brother; two men came to him, laid him down, and split his belly. We rushed toward him and found him standing with changed color. His father embraced him and I embraced him, then we said: What is wrong with you, my son? He said: Two men in white clothes came to me, laid me down, then split my belly; by Allah, I do not know what they did. She said: We carried him and returned with him. She said: His father said: By Allah, O Halima, I think this boy has been struck; let us return him to his family before what we fear appears. She said: We returned him to her, and she said: What brought you back with him when you were keen upon him? She said: I said: By Allah, only that we reared him and fulfilled our duty toward him, then I feared events for him, so we said he should be among his family. She said: Amina said: By Allah, that is not your case; tell me your story and his. By Allah, she kept at us until we told her his story. She said: Did you fear for him? No, by Allah; this son of mine has a great matter. Shall I not tell you about him? I carried him, and never carried a load lighter or more blessed than him. Then I saw a light like a shooting star coming from me when I bore him, lighting for me the necks of camels in Busra. Then I bore him, and he did not fall as boys fall: he fell placing his hand on the ground, raising his head to the sky. Leave him and attend to your own affair.
