And if I live, I shall judge in it with a judgment by which both he who recites the Quran and he who does not recite the Quran will judge. Then he said: O Allah, I call You to witness over the governors of the provinces, for I sent them only to teach them their religion and the Sunnah of their Prophet, and to be just to them, and to divide their fay' among them, and to refer to me what is obscure of their affair to them. Then, O people, you eat from two trees which I see only as foul: this onion and garlic; I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), when he found their smell from a man in the mosque, order him taken out to al-Baqi', so whoever eats them, let him kill them by cooking.

By Allah, I know no one among people remaining more deserving of that than him, and I shall tell you about that: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would continually spend the night in conversation at Abu Bakr's, likewise on a night, concerning some affair of the Muslims, and he spent one night in conversation at his place while I was with him, then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out walking and we walked with him, and there was a man standing praying in the mosque, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood listening to his recitation, then when we were about to recognize the man, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whoever is pleased to recite the Quran fresh as it was revealed, let him recite it upon the recitation of Ibn Umm Abd, he said: Then the man sat supplicating, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) began saying: Ask, you will be given, so Umar said: So I said: By Allah, I shall go to him in the morning and give him glad tidings, he said: So I went to him in the morning to give him glad tidings, and found Abu Bakr had preceded me to him and given him glad tidings, and by Allah, I never raced him to any good but he preceded me to it.

He said: So he said: Yes, by Him in whose hand is the soul of Umar, I shall surely retaliate from him; shall I not retaliate when I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) retaliating from himself? Lo, do not strike the Muslims lest you humiliate them, nor withhold their rights lest you make them disbelieve, nor keep them in garrisons lest you tempt them, nor settle them in thickets lest you waste them.
