And it was said: the first hadd established in Islam was for a man brought to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, who had stolen, and testimony was borne against him; the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, ordered him to be cut; when the man was surrounded, he looked at the face of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, as though ashes had been strewn in it. The man said: O Messenger of Allah! As though cutting him weighs hard upon you. He said: What prevents me, while you are helpers of Satan against your brother? They said: Then release him. He said: Why not before you brought him to me? The Imam, when a hadd is brought to him, ought not suspend it.

Their scholars conferred before raising their matter to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and some said to others: This Prophet was sent with lightening; we know stoning was obligated in the Torah. Come, let us ask this Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, about our two companions who committed zina after being muhsan: if he gives us a fatwa less than stoning, we accept it and take the lightening, and argue with it before Allah when we meet Him, saying: we accepted the fatwa of a Prophet of Your Prophets; and if he orders us with stoning, we disobey him, though we have disobeyed Allah in what He wrote upon us, that stoning is in the Torah. They came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, while he sat in the mosque among his Companions, and said: O Abu al-Qasim, what deem you of a man of them and a woman who committed zina after being muhsan? The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, rose and gave them nothing in reply, and men of the Muslims rose with him until they came to the Jews' house of study, where they studied the Torah. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, stood at the door and said: O company of Jews, I adjure you by Allah Who sent down the Torah upon Musa, what find you in the Torah for one who commits zina when muhsan? They said: He is blackened and paraded. They said: And blackening is that the two adulterers are carried upon a donkey, their backs faced to each other, and they are paraded. He said: And their learned man, a young youth, fell silent; when the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saw him, he pressed him. Their learned man said: O Allah, since you adjured us, we find stoning in the Torah. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: What was the first thing by which you lightened Allah's command? They said: A man of us, a kinsman of one of our kings, committed zina, so he imprisoned him and delayed stoning from him; then another committed zina after him, of a family of the people, and the king wanted to stone him, but his folk stood in his way, or he said: folk rose for him, and said: By Allah, our companion shall not be stoned until you bring your companion and stone him. So they made this punishment between them. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: I judge by what is in the Torah. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, ordered them, and they were stoned. Al-Zuhri said: Salim told me, from Ibn Umar, he said: I saw them when the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, ordered their stoning; when it came, I saw him shielding her with his hand, to guard her from the stones. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: What find you in the Torah? They said: We find nothing in it. Abdullah ibn Salam said: You lie; in the Torah is stoning. They brought the Torah, and their teacher who taught it placed his palm upon the verse of stoning, and read what was above his hand and behind it, and did not read the verse of stoning. Abdullah ibn Salam pulled his hand from the verse of stoning and said: What is this? When they saw that, he said: It is the verse of stoning. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, ordered them, and they were stoned, where funerals are placed. Abdullah said: I saw her companion bending over her, to guard her from the stones.

He said: What you just took of your brother's honor is worse than eating carrion. By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, he is now in the rivers of Paradise, plunging in them.

The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, called her guardian and said: Treat her well; when she delivers, tell me. He did so. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, ordered her clothes tied over her, then ordered her, and she was stoned, then he prayed over her. Umar said: O Messenger of Allah! You stoned her, yet pray over her? He said: She repented a repentance that, had it been divided among seventy of Madinah's people, it would have encompassed them; and did she find better than that she gave her life for Allah, mighty and majestic?

Ibn Jurayj reported: Abu Juhayfah told me that al-Shabi told him that Ali was brought a pregnant woman of Hamdan, Sharahah by name; she had committed zina. Ali said to her: Perhaps the man forced you? She said: No. He said: Perhaps the man fell upon you while you slept? She said: No. He said: Perhaps you have a husband among these our enemies, and you conceal him? She said: No. So he detained her till she delivered; he flogged her Thursday, one hundred lashes, and stoned her Friday. He ordered a pit dug for her in the market; the people surrounded her, or he said: with her; he struck them with a stick, then said: Not thus is stoning; if you do this, some of you will kill others; but line up as you line for prayer. Then he said: O people, the first of the people to stone the adulterer is the Imam, when there is confession; and when four witnesses testify to zina, the first of the people to stone are the witnesses by their testimony against him, then the Imam, then the people. Then he threw her with a stone and said takbir; then he ordered the first row and said: Throw. Then he said: Disperse. And likewise row by row, till they killed her.
