ʿAbdullah ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما said that when Abū Luʾluʾah stabbed ʿUmar with two stabs, ʿUmar thought he might have some fault toward the people of which he was unaware. He summoned Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما, whom he loved, kept near, and listened to, and said he wished to learn from a gathering of people whether this had arisen from them. Ibn ʿAbbās went out and passed no gathering except that they were weeping, and returned to ʿUmar saying that every gathering he had passed was weeping as if they had that day lost their firstborn children. ʿUmar asked who had killed him, and he replied Abū Luʾluʾah the Magian, the slave of al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah. Ibn ʿAbbās saw gladness on his face, and ʿUmar praised Allah that he had not been afflicted by one who professes there is no deity but Allah, reminding them that he had forbidden them from bringing any of the foreign captives to them but they had disobeyed him. He then asked for his brothers to be called, naming ʿUthmān, ʿAlī, Talhah, al-Zubayr, ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn ʿAwf, and Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqās رضي الله عنهم. Messengers were sent to them, and he placed his head in the lap of Ibn ʿUmar. When they arrived, Ibn ʿAbbās announced their presence, and ʿUmar said that he had considered the affair of the Muslims and found these six to be the heads and leaders of the people, and that this matter would only be among them, for as long as they remained upright the affairs of the people would remain upright, but if there were dissension it would be among them. When Ibn ʿAbbās heard him mention dissension and discord, he thought it would occur, for seldom did ʿUmar say anything except that he saw it realised. Then blood flowed heavily and they whispered among themselves until he feared they might pledge one of themselves, so he said that the Commander of the Faithful was still alive and there could not be two caliphs with one looking at the other. ʿUmar asked to be lifted, and they lifted him. He instructed them to consult for three days while Suhayb led the people in prayer. They asked whom to consult, and he said to consult the Muhājirūn and the Ansār and the chiefs of the armies present. He then called for a drink of milk, drank, and the whiteness of the milk came out of his two wounds, so he knew it was death. He said that now, if he owned the whole world, he would ransom himself with it from the terror of what lies ahead, though he had seen nothing but good, and praise belongs to Allah. Ibn ʿAbbās consoled him, recalling how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had supplicated that Allah strengthen the religion and the Muslims through him when they were in fear at Makkah, and how his Islam was a triumph through which Islam and the Messenger and his Companions prevailed, and how his emigration to Madinah was a victory, and how he was never absent from any battle witnessed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ against the polytheists, and how the Messenger died pleased with him, and how he supported the Caliph after him upon the way of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until people entered Islam willingly and unwillingly, and how that Caliph died pleased with him, and how he then ruled in the best manner, through whom Allah settled cities, collected revenues, repelled the enemy, and brought ease to every household in their religion and provision, and then sealed for him with martyrdom, so glad tidings to him. ʿUmar replied that the deceived is the one whom they deceive, and asked ʿAbdullah whether he would bear witness for him before Allah on the Day of Resurrection. When he said yes, ʿUmar praised Allah and asked ʿAbdullah ibn ʿUmar to place his cheek upon the earth. He moved him from his thigh to his leg, but ʿUmar insisted, so he left his beard and cheek until they rested upon the ground, and ʿUmar said woe to him and to his mother if Allah did not forgive him. Then he passed away, may Allah have mercy on him. When he passed, they sent to ʿAbdullah ibn ʿUmar, who refused to come unless they did what ʿUmar had commanded of consulting the Muhājirūn and the Ansār and the chiefs of the armies present. Al-Hasan said, when ʿUmar's conduct at his death and his fear of his Lord were mentioned to him, that this is the believer who combines excellence and compassion, while the hypocrite combines evil and delusion, and that he had never found, among those gone or remaining, a servant who increased in excellence except that he increased in fear and compassion, nor one who increased in evil except that he increased in delusion.
