Rashid, freedman of Ḥabib ibn Aws al-Thaqafi, reported that ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAṣ narrated to him from his mouth to his mouth: When we turned from the Confederates at the Trench, I gathered men among Quraysh who regarded my place and heard from me, saying to them, By Allah, you know I see Muḥammad's affair rising with a great remarkable ascendancy, and I have seen a matter, so what do you deem concerning it. They said, What have you seen. I said, I deem we join the Negus and stay with him; if Muḥammad triumphs over our people we shall be with the Negus, for to be under his hand is more beloved to us than to be under Muḥammad's hand, and if our people triumph we are known, and only good shall come to us from them. They said, This is the opinion. He said: I said to them, Gather for me what is gifted, and the most beloved gift to him from our land was hides. We gathered many hides for him, then went out until we came to him. By Allah, while we were with him, ʿAmr ibn Umayyah al-Ḍamri came, whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent to him concerning Jaʿfar and his companions. When he entered to him and left from him, he said: I said to my companions, This is ʿAmr ibn Umayyah; if I enter upon the Negus and ask him for him and he gives him to me, I shall strike his neck. If I do that, Quraysh shall see I have sufficed them by killing Muḥammad's messenger. He said: I entered upon him and prostrated to him as I used to do, and he said, Welcome to my friend; have you gifted me something from your land. He said: I said, Yes, O king. Then I said, O king, I have gifted you many hides. Then I presented them to him, and they pleased him and he desired them. Then I said, O king, I saw a man leave from you, the messenger of an enemy man of ours, so give him to me that I may kill him, for he has struck among our nobles and best. He said: He grew angry, stretched his hand, and struck his nose with a blow I thought he broke it. Had the earth split for me I would have entered it in fear of him. Then I said, O king, by Allah, had I thought you disliked this I would not have asked it. He said, Do you ask me to give you the messenger of a man to whom comes the Greatest Law that came to Musa, that you may kill him. He said: I said, O king, is it thus. He said, Woe to you, O ʿAmr, obey me and follow him, for by Allah he is upon truth, and he shall triumph over whoever opposes him as Musa triumphed over Pharaoh and his troops. He said: Will you pledge to him for me upon Islam. He said, Yes. He stretched his hand, and he pledged to him upon Islam. Then I went out to my companions with my opinion changed from what I was upon, concealing my Islam from my companions. Then I went out heading to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and met Khalid ibn al-Walid before the Conquest, coming from Makkah. I said, O Abu Sulayman. He said, By Allah, the course is clear; the man is a prophet; go and accept Islam, until when. He said: I said, By Allah, I came only to accept Islam. He said: We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Khalid ibn al-Walid advanced, accepted Islam, and pledged. Then I drew near and said, O Messenger of Allah, I pledge to you on condition You forgive me what preceded of my sin, not mentioning what comes after. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, O ʿAmr, pledge, for Islam effaces what was before it, and emigration effaces what was before it. He said: I pledged to him, then departed. Ibn Isḥaq said: One I do not suspect narrated to me that ʿUthman ibn Ṭalḥah ibn Abi Ṭalḥah was with them both, accepting Islam when they accepted Islam. > **"O ʿAmr, pledge, for Islam effaces what was before it, and emigration effaces what was before it"**
