Ibn ʿAbbās, may Allāh be pleased with them both, reported that Fāṭimah was mentioned to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ but whomever mentioned her he turned from, until they despaired of her. Saʿd ibn Muʿādh met ʿAlī and swore he deemed the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ withheld her only for him. ʿAlī asked why he thought so, protesting he was neither a man of worldly means sought for what he had — having neither gold nor silver — nor a disbeliever softened toward his religion, but the first to submit. Saʿd adjured him to relieve him therein, for his relief lay in it, instructing him to declare he came suing to Allāh and His Messenger for Fāṭimah bint Muḥammad ﷺ. ʿAlī set out burdened and reticent, and the Prophet ﷺ asked whether he had a need, O ʿAlī. When he declared he came suing to Allāh and His Messenger for Fāṭimah bint Muḥammad, the Prophet ﷺ answered welcome — a faint word. Returning to Saʿd complaining he had only been welcomed with a faint word, Saʿd swore by Him Who sent him with truth that he had married him, for there was no breaking or lying with him, and adjured him to return morrow asking when he would house him. ʿAlī deemed this harder than the first, but as commanded asked when he would house him, and was answered that night if Allāh willed. He summoned Bilāl, declaring he had married his daughter to his cousin and loved that food at marriage be his community's practice, bidding him take a sheep and four mudds and make a bowl gathering the Emigrants and Helpers, then inform him. Bilāl did so and brought the bowl before him; the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ pierced its top, bade men enter in troops without any troop returning, and they came successively till all had done. From the remainder he spat, blessed, and bade Bilāl carry it to his mothers bidding them eat and feed visitors. Then he entered upon the women declaring he had married his daughter to his cousin whose station they knew, and committed her to them. The women perfumed, dressed and adorned her from their own. When the Prophet ﷺ entered the women left behind a curtain, save Asmāʾ bint ʿUmays, may Allāh be pleased with her, who explained she guarded his daughter, for a bride on her wedding night needs a woman near for any need. He prayed Allāh guard her before, behind, right and left from the accursed Satan. Then he called Fāṭimah, who came weeping upon seeing ʿAlī seated with the Prophet ﷺ. Fearing her tears were for his lack of wealth, he asked what made her weep, assuring he had not wronged her concerning himself but had secured the best of his family — swearing he had married her to one fortunate in this world and among the righteous in the next — and she softened. He called for a wash-basin filled with water, spat therein, wiped his face and feet, called Fāṭimah, dashed a handful upon her head and between her breasts, sprinkled their skins, embraced her and prayed that as Allāh had removed impurity from him and purified him so He purify them. With another basin he did the same with ʿAlī and supplicated likewise, then bade them rise to their house, praying Allāh gather them, bless their secret and set right their minds, closing their door with his hand. Ibn ʿAbbās added that Asmāʾ bint ʿUmays, may Allāh be pleased with her, told him she watched the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ never cease supplicating for them alone, associating none with them, till he disappeared into his chamber ﷺ. > **"As though you have a need, O ʿAlī. Welcome. When will you house me. Tonight if Allāh wills. O Bilāl, I have married my daughter to my cousin, and I love that food at marriage be my community's practice — take a sheep and four mudds, make a bowl for me gathering the Emigrants and Helpers, and when finished inform me. Admit the people to me troop by troop, and let no troop depart to another. O Bilāl, carry it to your mothers and tell them: Eat and feed whoever visits you. I have married my daughter to my cousin, and you know her station with me, and I commit her to you — so attend to her. Gently, who are you. I ask my God to guard you before you, behind you, to your right and to your left from the accursed Satan. What makes you weep — I have not wronged you concerning myself, and I have secured for you the best of my family; by Him in Whose Hand is my soul I have married you to one fortunate in this world, and in the next he is among the righteous. O Asmāʾ, bring me the wash-basin filled with water. O Allāh, she is from me and I am from her — O Allāh, as You removed impurity from me and purified me, purify them. Rise to your house — may Allāh gather you, bless your secret and set right your minds"**
