Ismaʿil ibn Rashid reports the account of Ibn Muljam, may Allah curse him and his companions: that ʿAbd al-Raḥman ibn Muljam, al-Burk ibn ʿAbdillah, and ʿUmar ibn Bakr al-Tamimi gathered at Makkah, discussed the affairs of people, criticised the conduct of their rulers, then mentioned the people of al-Nahrawan with mercy, saying by Allah what would they do remaining after them: their brothers who had summoned people to worship their Lord fearing no blame in Allah. Were they to sell themselves, come to the imams of misguidance, seek to kill them, relieve the lands of them, and avenge their brothers. Ibn Muljam of Egypt said he would suffice them against ʿAli ibn Abi Ṭalib; al-Burk ibn ʿAbdillah said he would suffice them against Muʿawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan; ʿAmr ibn Bakr al-Tamimi said he would suffice them against ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAṣ. They pledged and covenanted by Allah none would turn from his target until killing him or dying before him, took poisoned swords, and appointed the seventeenth passed of Ramaḍan for each to assault his target. Each set out to the city of his target. Ibn Muljam al-Muradi came to his companions at Kufah concealing his affair, met his companions of Taym al-Ribab whom ʿAli had killed in number on the Day of the River, and they mourned their slain. That day he met a woman of Taym al-Ribab called Qaṭam bint al-Shiḥnah, whose father and brother ʿAli had killed on the Day of the River, surpassingly beautiful. Seeing her distracted his mind and he forgot his need, proposing to her. She said she would not marry until he healed her: he asked what she desired, and she said three thousand, a slave and singing girl, and the killing of ʿAli ibn Abi Ṭalib. He said it was her dowry, though doubting she meant the killing of ʿAli. She said yes: to seek his unguarded moment, for if he struck him he would heal himself and her, and life with her would benefit him, while if killed what was with Allah was better than this world and its splendour. He said only the killing of ʿAli had brought him to this city. She told him to inform her to seek helpers to strengthen and aid him, sending for Wardān of her people of Taym al-Ribab, who agreed, while Ibn Muljam approached Shabib ibn Najdah of Ashjaʿ asking whether he desired the honour of this world and the next in killing ʿAli. When Shabib exclaimed at the enormity and how he could kill him, he proposed ambush in the dawn: when ʿAli emerged for morning prayer they would assault and kill him; if they escaped they would heal themselves and attain vengeance, if killed what was with Allah was better. Shabib said had it been other than ʿAli it would be easier, knowing his tribulation in Islam and precedence with the Prophet ﷺ, finding no ease for his killing. Ibn Muljam reminded him he had killed the worshipping praying people of al-Nahrawan, so they agreed to kill him for their brothers. They entered upon Qaṭam in the great mosque in retreat, agreeing upon the killing of ʿAli. On the appointed night she bound them with silk, they took swords and sat opposite the door from which ʿAli emerged. ʿAli, may Allah be pleased with him, emerged for morning prayer calling prayer, prayer, whereupon Shabib assaulted but his sword struck the doorposts or arch, then Ibn Muljam assaulted striking his crown and fled. Others seized killers in the ensuing tumult, Jaʿdah ibn Hubayrah led morning prayer, and people crowded from every side. Muḥammad ibn Ḥunayf swore he prayed that night near the door among many townspeople in standing, bowing, and prostration unwearied from first to last, until ʿAli emerged calling O people, prayer, prayer. Whether he spoke the words or saw the gleam of swords, he heard judgment belongs to Allah, not to ʿAli nor his companions, saw swords and people, heard ʿAli say not to let the man escape, and people crowded from every side. He did not move until Ibn Muljam was seized and brought to ʿAli. When brought, ʿAli asked O enemy of Allah, had he not done good to him: he said yes. He asked what had carried him to this: he said he had sharpened it forty mornings asking Allah to kill with it the worst of His creation. ʿAli told him he saw none killed by it but him, and none but among the worst of Allah's creation. Ibn Muljam stood bound before al-Ḥasan when Umm Kulthum daughter of ʿAli wept calling O enemy of Allah, no harm upon her father while Allah would disgrace him. He asked why she wept: by Allah he had bought it for a thousand and poisoned it for a thousand, and were this blow upon all townspeople none would survive an hour, yet her father still lived. ʿAli told al-Ḥasan if he lived he would judge concerning him, and if he perished of this blow to strike him one blow without mutilation, for he had heard the Messenger ﷺ forbid mutilation even of a rabid dog. Jundab ibn ʿAbdillah entered asking ʿAli, if they lost him yet not lost him, should they pledge al-Ḥasan. He said he neither commanded nor forbade them; they knew best. When ʿAli, may Allah be pleased with him, passed, al-Ḥasan sent for Ibn Muljam, who offered a trait: by Allah he never gave Allah a covenant except he fulfilled it, having covenanted to kill ʿAli and Muʿawiyah or die before them, so if al-Ḥasan freed him to Muʿawiyah, by Allah if he did not kill him he would return to place his hand in his. Al-Ḥasan swore by Allah no until he faced the Fire, brought him forward and killed him, whereupon people wrapped him in mats and burned him with fire. ʿAli, may Allah be pleased with him, had said O sons of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, not to find them plunging into Muslim blood saying the Commander of the Faithful was killed: none should be killed for him except his killer. As for al-Burk ibn ʿAbdillah, he waited for Muʿawiyah emerging for morning prayer, assaulted with his sword while Muʿawiyah fled, the sword striking his buttock. He claimed news to gladden him: if he told him would it benefit him. When asked what, he said his brother had killed ʿAli that night. Muʿawiyah doubted his power, but he said ʿAli emerged with none guarding him, so Muʿawiyah ordered him killed. He summoned al-Saʿidi the physician, who said his wound was poisoned: to choose heated iron placed upon the sword's place, or a draught cutting offspring yet healing him, for the wound was poisoned. Muʿawiyah said no patience for fire, while in Yazid, ʿAbdullah, and their children was0 coolness of his eye, so he drank the draught that night and healed, with none born to him after. Thereafter Muʿawiyah ordered screened enclosures and guards standing over him. ʿAli counselled al-Ḥasan, al-Ḥusayn, and Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah with piety, prayer at its time, charity at its place, good ablution, forgiveness of faults, restraint of anger, joining kin, forbearance toward the ignorant, understanding in religion, deliberation in affairs, care of the Qurʾan, good neighbourliness, commanding right, forbidding wrong, and avoiding indecencies, enjoining honour to the brothers and no decision without them. His testament witnessed none deserved worship but Allah alone without partner and Muḥammad was His servant and Messenger sent with guidance and true religion to prevail over all religion though polytheists disliked; his prayer, rites, life, and death belonged to Allah Lord of worlds without partner, as commanded among the Muslims. He counselled al-Ḥasan, al-Ḥusayn, all family, children, and whomever his letter reached with piety to their Lord, dying only as Muslims, holding to the rope of Allah together without division, for he had heard the Messenger ﷺ say rectifying relations surpassed general prayer and fasting. To join kin easing reckoning; Allah in orphans not neglected in their presence; Allah in prayer, pillar of their religion; Allah in charity extinguishing the anger of the Lord; Allah in poor and needy shared in livelihood; Allah in the Qurʾan lest others precede in acting by it; Allah in striving with wealth and selves; Allah in the house of their Lord never left while they remained, for if abandoned they would not be respited; Allah in the covenant of their Prophet ﷺ not wronged among them; Allah in neighbours, the counsel of their Prophet ﷺ, for Jibril kept counselling of them until he thought he would bequeath them; Allah in the Companions of their Prophet ﷺ, for he had counselled of them; Allah in the two weak of women and what their right hands possessed, the last word of the Prophet ﷺ commending the two weak. Prayer, prayer, fearing no blame in Allah, Allah sufficing whoever intended and transgressed them, speaking good to people as Allah commanded. Not to abandon commanding right and forbidding wrong lest their worst rule them, then they supplicated unanswered. Upon connection and exchange, beware severance, turning backs, and division, with the verse to cooperate in righteousness and piety not in sin and aggression, fearing Allah severe in punishment. May Allah preserve them of the household and preserve in them their Prophet ﷺ. He entrusted them to Allah and greeted them with peace. Then he uttered only none deserved worship but Allah until taken in Ramaḍan of year forty, washed by al-Ḥasan, al-Ḥusayn, and ʿAbdullah ibn Jaʿfar, shrouded in three garments without shirt, with al-Ḥasan pronouncing nine takbirs over him, then al-Ḥasan managed affairs six months. Poems were recited on the dowry of Qaṭam, the killing of the best of people in the sacred month, and the escape of ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAṣ when his police chief Kharijah ibn Ḥabib was killed in his place, with Muʿawiyah's verses to ʿAmr thereupon. The bearer of his death news was Sufyan ibn ʿAbd Shams; al-Ḥasan sent Qays ibn Saʿd ibn ʿUbadah with twelve thousand in his vanguard; Muʿawiyah halted at Iliyaʾ that year; al-Ḥasan halted at the white palaces in al-Madaʾin; Muʿawiyah halted at Maskan. Al-Mukhtar ibn Abi ʿUbayd, then a young lad, proposed to his uncle Saʿd ibn Masʿud governing al-Madaʾin to bind al-Ḥasan and seek authority through him to Muʿawiyah, but Saʿd cursed him for assaulting the son of the daughter of the Messenger ﷺ. When al-Ḥasan saw people disperse from him, he sent to Muʿawiyah seeking truce, who sent ʿAbdullah ibn ʿAmir and ʿAbdullah ibn Samurah, who came to al-Ḥasan at al-Madaʾin, granted what he sought, and made peace. Al-Ḥasan then stood among people saying O people of Iraq, only three of himself kept him from them: their killing his father, stabbing him, and plundering his goods. He entered the obedience of Muʿawiyah, entered Kufah, and people pledged him.
