ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab, رضي الله عنه, with the hadith of the lizard: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in a gathering of his Companions when a Bedouin of Banu Sulaym came, having hunted a lizard and placed it in his sleeve. He went with it toward his lodging and saw a group. He said: For whom is this group. They said: For this one who claims he is the Prophet. He tore through the people, then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Muhammad, no woman ever bore one of speech more lying and more deficient than you. Were it not that the Arabs would call me hasty, I would hasten upon you and kill you, delighting all people by your killing. ʿUmar said: O Messenger of Allah, let me kill him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do you not know that the forbearing is near to being a prophet. Then the Bedouin turned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: By al-Lat and al-ʿUzza, I shall not believe in you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said to him: O Bedouin, what carried you to say what you said, speaking falsehood and not honoring my gathering. He said, belittling the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: And you speak to me too; by al-Lat and al-ʿUzza, I shall not believe in you until this lizard believes in you. He took the lizard from his sleeve and cast it before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: If this lizard believes in you, I shall believe in you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: O lizard. The lizard spoke to him in clear Arabic understood by all the people: At your service and felicity, O Messenger of the Lord of the worlds. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Whom do you worship. He said: Him whose Throne is in heaven, whose dominion is in earth, whose path is in the sea, whose mercy is in Paradise, and whose punishment is in the Fire. He said: Who am I, O lizard. He said: You are the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds and the Seal of the Prophets; successful is whoever confirms you, and disappointed is whoever denies you. The Bedouin said: I testify that there is no god but Allah and that you are truly the Messenger of Allah. By Allah, I came to you when none upon the face of the earth was more hateful to me than you, and by Allah, at this hour you are dearer to me than myself and my child. I have believed in you with my hair and skin, my inward and outward, my secret and open. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: Praise be to Allah who guided you to the religion which is supreme and not surpassed; Allah, Exalted, accepts it only with prayer, and prayer is accepted only with Qurʾan. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught him the Opening and Say: He is Allah, One. He said: O Messenger of Allah, I never heard in extended nor in rajaz verse better than this. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: This is the speech of the Lord of the worlds and not poetry. When you recite Say: He is Allah, One once, it is as if you recited a third of the Qurʾan; when you recite it twice, it is as if you recited two thirds; and when you recite it thrice, it is as if you recited the whole Qurʾan. The Bedouin said: What an excellent God, for our God accepts little and grants much. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Give the Bedouin. They gave him until they satisfied him. ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿAwf, رضي الله عنه, said: O Messenger of Allah, I wish to give him a she-camel seeking nearness to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, below the Bukhti and above the common, ten months pregnant. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: You have described what you give, and I shall describe for you what Allah, Exalted, shall give you in recompense. He said: Yes. He said: Yours shall be a she-camel of hollow pearl, its legs of green emerald, its neck of yellow topaz, upon it a litter, and upon the litter silk and brocade; it shall pass with you over the Bridge like darting lightning. The Bedouin left the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and was met by one thousand Bedouins upon one thousand mounts with one thousand spears and one thousand swords. He said to them: Where do you intend. They said: To fight this one who lies and claims he is a prophet. The Bedouin said: I testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They said to him: Have you apostatized. He said to them: I have not apostatized. He told them this hadith, and they all said: There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. That reached the Prophet ﷺ, so he met them in a cloak. They dismounted from their mounts, kissing what they saw of him, saying: There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. They said: Command us by your command, O Messenger of Allah. He said: You shall enter under the banner of Khalid ibn al-Walid. He said: None of the Arabs believed one thousand all together except Banu Sulaym. > **"Do you not know that the forbearing is near to being a prophet."** > **"O Bedouin, what carried you to say what you said, speaking falsehood and not honoring my gathering."** > **"O lizard."** > **"Whom do you worship."** > **"Who am I, O lizard."** > **"Praise be to Allah who guided you to the religion which is supreme and not surpassed; Allah, Exalted, accepts it only with prayer, and prayer is accepted only with Qurʾan."** > **"This is the speech of the Lord of the worlds and not poetry.
