Jabir and Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهم report concerning His word When the help of Allah and the victory comes until its end that when it was revealed to Muhammad ﷺ he said his soul had been announced, and Jibril said the Hereafter is better for him than the first and his Lord would soon give him so he would be pleased. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then commanded Bilal رضي الله عنه to call for congregational prayer, so the Emigrants and Helpers gathered at the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he prayed with the people, ascended the pulpit, praised Allah Almighty and extolled Him, then delivered a sermon at which hearts trembled and eyes wept, then asked what manner of prophet he had been to them. They answered with profuse gratitude that he had been to them as a merciful father and as a sincere compassionate brother, fulfilling the messages of Allah Almighty, conveying His revelation, and calling to the path of his Lord with wisdom and fair admonition, invoking for him the best reward granted a prophet on behalf of his nation. He then adjured them by Allah and by his right over them that whoever held a wrong from him should rise and requite from him, and none rose, then a second and a third adjuration that whoever held a wrong should rise and requite before the requital of the Resurrection. Then an aged shaykh called Ukkashah rose from among the Muslims, stepped through them until he stood before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, excusing himself that only repeated adjuration had moved him forward, recalling an expedition after Allah had granted victory when his she-camel came alongside his, and he dismounted to kiss his thigh, whereupon he raised the stick and struck his flank, unsure whether intentional or aimed at the camel. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared he would never intentionally strike him and told Bilal to go to the house of Fatimah رضي الله عنها and bring the trimmed stick. Bilal left the mosque with his hand upon his head calling out that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was offering requital from himself, knocked at Fatimah's door asking for the trimmed stick, and when she asked what her father would do with a stick on neither a pilgrimage nor a battle day, he told her he was bidding people farewell, departing the world and offering requital from himself. Fatimah said who could bear to requite the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and bade Bilal tell al-Hasan and al-Husayn to stand to be requited in his stead rather than let him be requited from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Bilal returned to the mosque, handed the stick to the Prophet ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ handed it to Ukkashah. When Abu Bakr and Umar رضي الله عنهما saw that they rose offering themselves before him for requital rather than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told them to proceed, for Allah knew their place and station. Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه then rose offering himself alive before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his back and belly for requital by his hand with a hundred lashes rather than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but the Prophet ﷺ told him to sit, for Allah knew his station and intention. Al-Hasan and al-Husayn رضي الله عنهما then rose saying he knew they were the grandsons of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and requital from them was as requital from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but the Prophet ﷺ told them to sit, O coolness of his eyes, invoking Allah not to forget this station of theirs. The Prophet ﷺ then told Ukkashah to strike if he would strike, and he replied that he had struck him while his belly was bare, so he ﷺ uncovered his belly while the Muslims cried aloud asking whether Ukkashah would strike the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When Ukkashah saw the whiteness of the belly of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as though fine linen, he could not refrain from falling upon him, kissing his belly and declaring his ransom and asking who could bear to requite him. The Prophet ﷺ said either to strike or to pardon, and he pardoned him hoping Allah would pardon him on the Day of Resurrection. The Prophet ﷺ then said whoever was pleased to look at his companion in Paradise should look at this shaykh, whereupon the Muslims rose kissing between the eyes of Ukkashah and congratulating him upon attaining high degrees and companionship of the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ fell ill that very day for eighteen days with people visiting him, he having been born on Monday, commissioned on Monday and passing on Monday. On Sunday his illness grew heavy, Bilal called the adhan then stood at the door asking peace upon him and whether to establish prayer, and Fatimah told him the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was occupied with himself. Bilal entered the mosque, and when dawn brightened he swore he would not establish it until he sought permission of his master the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he returned to the door calling for prayer with mercy invoked, and upon hearing Bilal the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told him to enter, for he was occupied with himself, and to command Abu Bakr to pray with the people. Bilal went out with his hand upon his head lamenting loss of help, severed hope and broken back, wishing his mother had never borne him or he had never witnessed this day from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then told Abu Bakr that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to lead the people. Abu Bakr advanced, being tender hearted, and when he saw the place of the Prophet ﷺ empty he could not control himself and fell unconscious, the Muslims cried aloud, and when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard their clamour and was told it was weeping at his absence, he summoned Ali ibn Abi Talib and al-Abbas, leaned upon them to the mosque, prayed brief units, then turned with a kindly face entrusting them to Allah, assured of His grace and protection, with Allah their guardian after him, enjoining Godfearing and obedience after him, for he was parting the world on the first day of the Hereafter and the last day of this world. On Monday the matter intensified, and Allah Almighty revealed to the Angel of Death to descend to His beloved and chosen Muhammad ﷺ in the fairest form and to be gentle in seizing his soul. The Angel of Death descended, stood at the door in the likeness of a bedouin, greeting the household of prophethood, the source of the message and the resort of angels, asking entry. Aishah told Fatimah to answer the man, and Fatimah twice answered that Allah would reward his walking but the Messenger of Allah was occupied with himself. At the third call declaring entry inevitable, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard the voice of the Angel of Death and asked Fatimah who was at the door, and she described a man seeking entry repeatedly, at whose third call her skin had shuddered and her limbs trembled. The Prophet ﷺ told her this was the demolisher of pleasures, the splitter of gatherings, the widower of wives, the orphaner of children, the ruiner of houses and the builder of graves, the Angel of Death, and bade him enter with mercy. The Angel of Death entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who asked whether he had come visiting or seizing, and he answered both, commanded by Allah Almighty neither to enter upon him nor to seize his soul except by his permission, returning otherwise to his Lord. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked where he had left his beloved Jibril, and he said in the lowest heaven with the angels consoling him for him. Jibril soon came and sat at his head, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said this was departure from the world and asked for glad tidings of what was for him with Allah. Jibril gave tidings that the doors of heaven stood opened with angels arrayed in rows with greeting and sweet basil saluting his soul, then that the doors of the Gardens stood opened with rivers flowing, trees lowered and houris adorned for the coming of his soul, then that he would be the first intercessor and first granted intercession on the Day of Resurrection, at each of which he praised the Countenance of his Lord and asked for more. Jibril asked what his care was, and he asked about his grief over the reciters of the Quran after him, the fasters of Ramadan, the pilgrims of the Sacred House, and his chosen nation. Jibril bade him rejoice, for Allah Almighty had forbidden Paradise to all prophets and nations until he and his nation entered it, whereupon his soul was content and he told the Angel of Death to proceed as commanded. Ali asked, when he was taken, who would wash him, in what they would shroud him, who would pray over him and who would lower him into the grave, and the Prophet ﷺ said as for washing Ali should wash him with al-Fadl ibn Abbas pouring water over him and Jibril as their third, then shroud him in three new garments with Jibril bringing embalming from Paradise, then place him upon the bier in the mosque and go out, for the first to pray over him would be the Lord Almighty from above His Throne, then Jibril, then Mikail, then Israfil, then the angels in companies, then they should enter and stand in rows with none preceding over him. Fatimah lamented the parting and asked when she would meet him, and he said she would meet him on the Day of Resurrection at the Hawd while he gave drink to whoever came to it of his nation, and if not there then at the Balance while he interceded for his nation, and if not there then at the Sirat while he called upon his Lord to save his nation from the Fire. The Angel of Death then set to seizing the soul of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when it reached the knees he cried in pain, when it reached the navel he cried in anguish with Fatimah echoing his distress, and when it reached the throat he addressed Jibril upon the severity of the bitterness of death. Jibril turned his face from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when asked whether he disliked looking at him, Jibril answered that no soul could bear to look at him while he endured the agonies of death. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was then taken, Ali ibn Abi Talib washed him with Ibn Abbas pouring water and Jibril with them, he was shrouded in three new garments, carried upon a bier, brought into the mosque, placed there and the people went out. The first to pray over him was the Lord Blessed and Exalted from above His Throne, then Jibril, then Mikail, then Israfil, then the angels in companies. Ali said they heard a murmur in the mosque without seeing a person, then heard a caller bid them enter with mercy and pray over their Prophet ﷺ, so they entered and stood row upon row as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had commanded, magnifying with the magnification of Jibril and praying over the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the prayer of Jibril, with none preceding over the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, Ali ibn Abi Talib and Ibn Abbas entered the grave, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was buried. When the people left, Fatimah asked Ali whether they had buried the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and upon his assent she asked how their souls had borne scattering dust over the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, whether no mercy for him remained in their breasts when he had been the teacher of good. He affirmed yet said it was the command of Allah which none repels, and she wept and lamented for her father that now Jibril was cut off who used to bring them revelation from heaven. > **"O Jibril, my soul has been announced. The Hereafter is better for you than the first, and your Lord shall soon give you so you shall be pleased. O you people, what manner of prophet was I to you? O company of Muslims, I adjure you by Allah and by my right over you: whoever holds a wrong from me, let him rise and requite from me. O company of Muslims, I adjure you by Allah and by my right over you: whoever holds a wrong from me, let him rise and requite from me before the requital on the Day of Resurrection. I seek you refuge by the majesty of Allah lest the Messenger of Allah intentionally strike you. O Bilal, go to the house of Fatimah and bring me the trimmed stick. O daughter of the Messenger of Allah, hand me the trimmed stick. O Fatimah, how heedless you are of what your father is in: the Messenger of Allah bids people farewell, departs the world and offers requital from himself. O Bilal, then tell al-Hasan and al-Husayn to stand to this man to be requited from them, and not let him requite from the Messenger of Allah. O Ukkashah, here we are before you, so requite from us and do not requite from the Messenger of Allah. Proceed, O Abu Bakr, and you, O Umar, proceed, for Allah has known your place and your station. O Ukkashah, I am alive before the Messenger of Allah, and my soul cannot bear that you strike the Messenger of Allah, so here is my back and my belly, requite from me by your hand, flog me a hundred, and do not requite from the Messenger of Allah. O Ali, sit, for Allah has known your station and your intention. O Ukkashah, do you not know that we are the grandsons of the Messenger of Allah, and requital from us is as requital from the Messenger of Allah? Sit, O coolness of my eyes, may Allah not forget this station of yours. O Ukkashah, strike if you are striking. Either strike or pardon. Whoever is pleased to look at my companion in Paradise, let him look at this shaykh. Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah, and mercy of Allah, shall I establish prayer? Enter, O Bilal, the Messenger of Allah today is occupied with himself. Command Abu Bakr to pray with the people. O Abu Bakr, the Messenger of Allah commands you to pray with the people. O company of Muslims, I entrust you to Allah. You are in the grace of Allah and His protection. Allah is your guardian after me. O company of Muslims, upon you is Godfearing and guarding obedience after me, for I part the world. This is the first day of the Hereafter and the last day of this world. Peace be upon you, O household of prophethood, and source of the message, and resort of the angels, may I enter? May Allah reward your walking, O servant of Allah, the Messenger of Allah is occupied with himself. O Fatimah, who is at the door? O Fatimah, do you know who is at the door? This is the demolisher of pleasures, the splitter of gatherings, this is the widower of wives, the orphaner of children, this is the ruiner of houses and the builder of graves, this is the Angel of Death. Enter, with mercy of Allah upon you, O Angel of Death. Have you come to me visiting or seizing? Where have you left my beloved Jibril? This is departure from the world, so give me glad tidings of what is for me with Allah. To the Countenance of my Lord be praise, so give me glad tidings, O Jibril. Now my soul is content. Come, O Angel of Death, and proceed to what you were commanded. O Ali, as for washing, wash me yourself, with al-Fadl ibn Abbas pouring water over you, and Jibril as your third. When you finish washing me, shroud me in three new garments, and Jibril shall bring me embalming from Paradise. When you place me upon the bier, place me in the mosque and go out, for the first to pray over me shall be the Lord Almighty from above His Throne, then Jibril, then Mikail, then Israfil, then the angels in companies. Then enter and stand in rows, with none preceding over me. My daughter, you shall meet me on the Day of Resurrection at the Hawd, while I give drink to whoever comes to me at the Hawd of my nation. You shall meet me at the Balance, while I intercede for my nation. You shall meet me at the Sirat, while I call: Lord, save my nation from the Fire. O Jibril, how severe is the bitterness of death. O Jibril, did you dislike looking at me? Enter, with mercy of Allah upon you, and pray over your Prophet."**
