فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ: مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ تَحْفَظُ أَخَاكَ إِلَّا مِنْ نَفْسِهِ - ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr reports that when Muʿawiyah died, ʿAbdullah ibn al-Zubayr withheld obedience from Yazid ibn Muʿawiyah and openly reviled him, and when this reached Yazid he swore Ibn al-Zubayr would only be brought to him in fetters or he would send against him, so it was suggested to Ibn al-Zubayr that silver fetters be made for him to wear beneath his robe to fulfil the oath, since reconciliation befitted him, but he prayed Allah would not fulfil Yazid's oath and recited that he would never yield for other than truth until stone softened to the grinder's tooth, declaring by Allah that a sword-stroke in honour was dearer to him than a whip-stroke in disgrace, then he called the people to himself and openly opposed Yazid ibn Muʿawiyah, so Yazid dispatched Muslim ibn ʿUqbah al-Murri with the Syrian army, ordering him to fight the people of Madinah and then march to Makkah, and Muslim entered Madinah while the remnants of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fled from him, wrought havoc and excessive killing, then departed, and dying on the way appointed Husayn ibn Numayr al-Kindi, warning him as son of a donkey's packsaddle to beware Qurashi deceits and to deal with them only by arms and then by reaping, and Husayn marched to Makkah, fought Ibn al-Zubayr for days while Ibn al-Zubayr pitched a tent in the mosque where women watered and nursed the wounded, fed the hungry, and sheltered the injured, until Husayn complained that a lion kept emerging from that tent as from its den and asked who would suffice him, and a Syrian volunteered, and when night fell placed a torch at his spear-tip, spurred his horse, stabbed the tent so it blazed, while the Kaʿbah that day was draped in carpets with striped cloth above, so the wind carried the flames to the Kaʿbah until it burned, consuming that day the ram's horns with which Ishaq had been ransomed, and when news of Yazid ibn Muʿawiyah's death reached Husayn he fled, and after Yazid died Marwan ibn al-Hakam called the people to himself and was answered by Hims, Jordan, and Palestine, so Ibn al-Zubayr sent al-Dahhak ibn Qays al-Fihri with one hundred thousand men, and they met at Marj Rahit while Marwan stood with five thousand of Banu Umayyah, their clients and Syrian followers, and Marwan told his client Kidah to charge whichever flank he wished, and when Kidah balked at their numbers Marwan told him they were pressed men and hirelings, slaves of gold and silver, whom bright spear-thrusts would make to destroy themselves, so he charged, routed them, killed al-Dahhak ibn Qays, and shattered the army, concerning which Zufar recited verses on the carnage of Rahit left for Marwan, on war's persistence, on pastures regrowing while rancours remain, and on Bahdal's house living while Ibn al-Zubayr is slain, swearing by Allah's House they would not kill him before a bright fateful day and flashing swords like sunlight, and then Marwan died, ʿAbd al-Malik called the people to himself, the Syrians answered, and he asked from the minbar who would deal with Ibn al-Zubayr, and al-Hajjaj thrice volunteered, saying he had dreamt he stripped Ibn al-Zubayr's robe and wore it, so ʿAbd al-Malik appointed him over the army to Makkah, and al-Hajjaj fought Ibn al-Zubayr there, while Ibn al-Zubayr urged the Makkans to hold the two mountains, for they would remain well and honoured so long as the enemy did not dominate them, but soon al-Hajjaj and his men dominated Abu Qubays, mounted the catapult upon it, and pelted Ibn al-Zubayr and his men in the mosque, and on the morning Ibn al-Zubayr was killed he entered upon his mother Asmaʾ daughter of Abu Bakr, then a hundred years old with neither tooth lost nor sight impaired, and when she asked how his party fared and he told her, he laughed and said in death there is rest, but she replied, O my son, do you wish it for me, for she would not die until she attained one of his two ends, either his rule to cool her eyes or his martyrdom to commend him to Allah, and as he bade her farewell she warned him never to surrender any of his religion for fear of killing, and he left her, entered the mosque, set two door-leaves by the Black Stone to shield himself from the catapult, and when a comer suggested opening the Kaʿbah's door for him to ascend, he answered that he guarded his brother against everything but his own appointed term, and asked whether the Kaʿbah had sanctity this place lacked, for by Allah if they found them clinging to the Kaʿbah's curtains they would kill them, and when asked about treating for peace he asked whether this was an hour of peace, for by Allah if found therein they would all be slaughtered, reciting that he would neither buy life with disgrace nor climb a ladder from fear of death, but would meet fates like an unswerving arrow, then he exhorted the Zubayrids to sheath each his sword as he guards his face and not let it break so he must fend with his hand like a woman, swearing he had never met an assault but in the foremost rank nor felt a wound but the touch of medicine, and while thus engaged men entered through the Banu Jumah gate including a dark man, and told they were Himsis he charged them with two swords, struck the dark man first severing his leg, and when the man cursed him as son of an adulteress he answered, silence, son of Ham, is Asmaʾ an adulteress, then drove them from the mosque, and likewise charged Jordanians entering through the Banu Sahm gate reciting that he had never known a torrent-like raid whose dust clears not till night, driving them out, and charged Makhzum-gate entrants declaring one adversary alone would suffice him, while his helpers atop the mosque pelted the enemy with bricks, until a brick struck his crown, split his head, and he stood reciting that their wounds bleed not on their heels but drip upon their feet, then fell, his two clients crouched over him declaring the slave guards his master and is guarded, and then his head was severed and carried away.
