ʿUtayy al-Saʿdī reported that he journeyed seeking knowledge to Kūfah, found ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd among its people in its great mosque, sought beneficial knowledge, was questioned about his Basran Saʿdī origin, heard a Prophetic commendation of Banū Saʿd after a mans offer of abundant wealth, was invited to ask, inquired about a recognizable sign of the Hour, saw Ibn Masʿūd sit upright, heard that he had asked the same of the Messenger ﷺ, then received a long enumeration of signs and moral inversion ending with four mosques, alliances sundered, and hopes with works following. > **"Yes, O Ibn Masʿūd. The Hour has landmarks and portents. Among its landmarks and portents are that the child is anger, rain is scorching heat, the wicked overflow, the treacherous is trusted, the trustworthy is betrayed, the liar is believed, the truthful is denied, every tribe is led by its hypocrites, every market by its wicked, the mosque is adorned, pulpits are raised, hearts are estranged, increase traverses kinship, knowledge spreads while fornication and usury appear, the Qurʾān is taken as flutes, trust is taken as spoil, charity as loss, kinship visitation as favor, the liar is called truthful, the truthful called liar, the treacherous called trustworthy, the trustworthy called treacherous, rain increases while trees decrease, scholars decrease while reciters increase, hopes are pursued with works, the poor is scorned, knowledge is sought for other than Allah, the child angers his parents, a man satisfies his friend and angers his father, rain comes in unsuitable season, beggars circumambulate finding none to give, a man is honored from fear of his evil, nations call one another as diners to a bowl from every horizon, Mosque, mosque, and people hope. Alliances are cut, the year is like a month, a thousand dīnārs profit nothing, blood is lawful, the strong devours the weak, trade increases, women assist husbands, markets draw near, desires are followed, judgments by conjecture, earthquakes, enmity and envy and stinginess appear. O Ibn Masʿūd, among its landmarks are that the shepherds compete in building, brothers differ. This is the dawn whose morning is the Hour. Then four mosques are built: the Sacred Mosque, the mosque of Madīnah or the mosque of the Messenger, the mosque of Bayt al-Maqdis, and a mosque on a market of theirs called Quds. Alliances are sundered, unsheathed swords are many, hopes are pursued with works."**
