On the authority of Umar ibn Abu Salamah, may Allah be pleased with him, who reported that the Prophet ﷺ said to Abdillah ibn Masud, may Allah be pleased with him, that earlier books came down from heaven through one gate while the Quran came down through seven gates upon seven ahruf, comprising the lawful, the unlawful, the decisive, the ambiguous, parables, command, and prohibition, and then gave him instruction about declaring lawful, declaring unlawful, acting, pausing, and reflecting, since all is from Allah and only people of understanding take heed. > **"Books used to come down from heaven through one gate, and the Quran was sent down through seven gates upon seven ahruf: lawful, unlawful, decisive, ambiguous, striking of parables, command, and prohibition. So declare its lawful lawful, declare its unlawful unlawful, act upon its decisive verses, pause at its ambiguous ones, and take heed from its parables, for all of it is from Allah, and none takes heed except people of understanding."**
