Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained after Uhud through the rest of Shawwal, Dhu al-Qa'da, Dhu al-Hijja, and Muharram, then sent his Companions to Bi'r Ma'una in Safar, four months after Uhud. Ishaq narrated to me from al-Mughira ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith ibn Hisham, 'Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn 'Amr ibn Hazm, and other scholars. They said: Abu Bara 'Amir ibn Malik ibn Ja'far, Mula'ib al-Asinna, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Madina. He offered him Islam; he did not accept, yet was not far from Islam. He said: > **"O Muhammad, if you sent a man of your Companions to call them to your cause, I hope they would respond to you."** The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: > **"I fear the people of Najd."** Abu Bara said: I grant them protection — send them to call people to your cause. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent al-Mundhir ibn 'Amr, brother of Banu Sa'ida of Khazraj, called al-Mu'taq li-yamut, with forty of the best Muslims, among them al-Harith ibn al-Simma, Haram ibn Milhan brother of Banu 'Adi ibn al-Najjar, 'Urwa ibn Asma ibn al-Salt al-Sulami, Nafi' ibn Budayl ibn Warqa al-Khuza'i, 'Amir ibn Fuhayra freedman of Abu Bakr, and other named best Muslims. They marched until they camped at Bi'r Ma'una, a well in Banu 'Amir land near the lava field of Banu Sulaym, closer to Sulaym. When they camped they sent Haram ibn Milhan with the letter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to 'Amir ibn al-Tufayl. He did not even look at the letter but rushed at him and killed him. Then he called Banu 'Amir for help, but they refused, saying: We will not violate the protection of Abu Bara, for he contracted and guaranteed them. So he called the clans of Sulaym — 'Usayya, Ri'l, and Dhakwan — and they obeyed. They set out, surrounded the Muslims at their camp, and when the Muslims saw them they drew their swords and fought until the last of them was slain, except Ka'b ibn Zayd of Banu Dinar ibn al-Najjar, whom they left for dead among the slain with a spark of life; he lived on until he was martyred at al-Khandaq. 'Amr ibn Umayya al-Damri and an Ansari of Banu 'Amr ibn 'Awf learned of their companions' fate from a bird circling the army. They came to see, found the men weltering in blood and their horses standing by. The Ansari said to 'Amr ibn Umayya: What is your view? He said: I think we should go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and inform him. The Ansari said: But I have no desire to leave the place where Mundhir ibn 'Amr was slain. So he fought them until he was slain. Then they captured 'Amr ibn Umayya, and when he told them he was of Mudar, 'Amir ibn al-Tufayl released him, cut his forelock, and freed him in place of a slave his mother owed. 'Amr set out until at Qarqara in Quba two men of Banu 'Amir camped with him in one shade. When they slept he fell upon them and killed them, thinking he had taken revenge. When he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him, the Prophet ﷺ said: > **"You have killed two men whose blood money I shall surely pay. This is the deed of Abu Bara; I disliked it and feared it."** When Abu Bara heard, it weighed heavily on him that 'Amir violated his protection and thereby harmed the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ. So Hassan ibn Thabit incited the son of Abu Bara against 'Amir ibn al-Tufayl, saying: O sons of Umm al-Banin, did it not alarm you, though you are of the noblest of Najd — the mockery of 'Amir toward Abu Bara, violating him, and a mistake is not like an intentional act. Convey to Rabi'a of lofty deeds what happened after me: your father is the father of wars, Abu Bara, and your uncle is the noble Hakam ibn Sa'd. So Rabi'a ibn 'Amir charged 'Amir ibn al-Tufayl and stabbed him with a spear in the thigh, laying it open; he fell from his horse and said: This is the deed of Abu Bara — if I die, my blood is for my uncle and not to be pursued, and if I live I shall decide what to do about what was done to me.
