Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated: When we arrived at Madina we ate its fruits and found them disagreeable, suffering fever. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, kept inquiring about Badr. When it reached us that the polytheists had advanced, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, marched to Badr, and Badr is a well. The polytheists preceded us to it. We found therein two of their men, a Qurayshi and a freedman of Uqba ibn Abi Muayt. The Qurayshi slipped away, but Uqba's freedman we seized. We kept saying, How many are the people. He said, By Allah they are many in number, severe in might. Whenever he said that, Muslims beat him until they brought him to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: > **"How many are the people."** He said, By Allah many in number, severe in might. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, strove to make him inform but he refused. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked him: > **"How many camels do they slaughter."** He said, Ten each day. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: > **"The people are a thousand, each camel for a hundred and odd."** Then light rain afflicted us, so we went under trees and shields seeking shade from rain. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, spent the night supplicating his Lord, saying: > **"O Allah, if You destroy this band, You shall not be worshipped."** When dawn broke he called: > **"Prayer, O servants of Allah."** People came from under trees and shields. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed with us and urged fighting, then said: > **"Indeed Quraysh's host is beneath this red slope of the mountain."** When the enemy neared and we faced them, a man among them upon a red camel moved among the people. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: > **"O Ali, call Hamza for me, who is nearest to the polytheists, who is the owner of the red camel and what does he say to them."** Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: > **"If there is any among the people enjoining good, perhaps it is the owner of the red camel."** Hamza came and said, He is Utba ibn Rabia, forbidding fighting and saying to them, O people, I see a people courting death, you shall not reach them while good is in you. O people, bind it today upon my head and say, Utba ibn Rabia has cowardiced, though you know I am not your most cowardly. Abu Jahl heard and said, Do you say that. By Allah, had another said it I would have bitten him. Your chest has filled with fear. Utba said, At me you mean, O yellow one, today you shall know which is coward. So Utba, his brother Shayba, and his son Al-Walid advanced zealously, saying, Who will duel. Six Ansar youths went out. Utba said, We want not these, but let our cousins from Bani Abd al-Muttalib duel us. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: > **"Stand, O Ali, stand, O Hamza, stand, O Ubayda ibn al-Harith ibn al-Muttalib."** Allah killed Shayba and Utba sons of Rabia and Al-Walid ibn Utba. Ubayda was wounded. We killed seventy among them and captured seventy. A short Ansari man brought Al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib captive. Al-Abbas said, O Messenger of Allah, by Allah this one did not capture me, one hairless, most handsome-faced upon a piebald horse captured me, whom I see not among the people. The Ansari said, I captured him, O Messenger of Allah. He said: > **"Be silent, for Allah has aided you with a noble angel."** Ali, peace be upon him, said, We captured, among Bani al-Muttalib, Al-Abbas, Aqil, and Nawfal ibn al-Harith.
