Ma'qil ibn Yasar: 'Umar consulted al-Hurmuzan about Isbahan, Persia, and Adharbayjan. He said, "O Commander of the Faithful, Isbahan is the head, Persia and Adharbayjan the two wings. If you cut one wing, the head rises with the other wing; if you cut the head, both wings fall. Begin with the head." 'Umar entered the mosque to find al-Nu'man ibn Muqarrin al-Muzani praying. He waited until he finished, then said, "I shall employ you." He said, "As collector, no; as raider, yes." He said, "You are a raider." He dispatched them and wrote to Kufah's people to reinforce him and join him — among them Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah, al-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam, al-Ash'ath, 'Amr ibn Ma'di Karib, and 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr. Al-Nu'man came to them with a river between him and them. He sent al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah as envoy. Their king was Dhu al-Janahayn. He consulted his companions: "Shall I sit for him in war-array or in royal splendor?" They said, "Sit for him in royal splendor." He sat on a throne with the crown on his head, two rows around him in brocade, earrings, and bracelets. Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah kept lowering his gaze, spear and shield in hand, the people around him in two rows on his carpet, piercing it with his spear to make them augur evil. Dhu al-Janahayn said to him, "You Arabs suffered severe hunger; if you wish, we shall provision you and you return to your land?" Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah spoke, praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, "We Arabs ate carrion and dead meat, people trod upon us and we trod upon none. Allah raised among us a Messenger of our noblest, middlemost in lineage, truest in speech. He promised us that here it would be opened for us. We found all he promised true. I see here finery I never saw the like of." The king said, "By Allah, you shall not return until some of you are killed and some captured." Al-Mughirah returned to al-Nu'man and informed him. Al-Nu'man said, "I witnessed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: when we did not fight at the day's start, he delayed fighting until the sun declined, the winds blew, and aid descended." Al-Nu'man said, "O people, stir — at the first shake let each man relieve his need; at the second let each look to his weapon and sandal-strap; at the third I shall charge, so charge. If any is killed, let none turn to any; if I am killed, do not turn to me. I shall supplicate Allah with a supplication, and I adjure every man of you to say amen to it." He said: > **"O Allah, grant al-Nu'man martyrdom today with victory for the Muslims, and open for them."** The people said amen. He shook his banner thrice, then charged, and was the first fallen. I passed by him, remembered his adjuration, did not turn to him, and marked his place. When we killed a man of theirs, his companions busied themselves dragging him away. Dhu al-Janahayn fell from a gray mule and his belly split. Allah opened for the Muslims. I came to al-Nu'man's place with life-breath in him. I came and said, "Allah has opened for them." He said, "Praise be to Allah. Write that to 'Umar." His soul flowed out. They gathered to al-Ash'ath ibn Qays. We came to his slave-mother and said, "Did he entrust you with anything?" She said, "No, but a case with a letter." I read it: "If so-and-so is killed, then so-and-so; if killed, then so-and-so." Hammad said: 'Ali ibn Zayd narrated to us: Abu 'Uthman al-Nahdi said he came to 'Umar, who asked about al-Nu'man. He said, "To Allah we belong and to Him we return." He said, "What of so-and-so?" I said, "He was killed, O Commander of the Faithful, and others we do not know." He said, "I do not know them, but Allah knows them."
