'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr said: The case of Khubayb ibn 'Adi ibn 'Abdillah al-Ansari of Banu 'Amr ibn 'Awf, 'Asim ibn Thabit ibn Abi al-Aqlah ibn 'Amr ibn 'Awf, and Zayd ibn al-Dathinah al-Ansari of Banu Bayadah, is that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent them as scouts toward Makkah to report to him the news of Quraysh. They took the Najd road until, at al-Raji' in Najd, Banu Lihyan of Hudhayl intercepted them. As for 'Asim ibn Thabit, he fought with his sword until he was killed. As for Khubayb and Zayd ibn al-Dathinah, they climbed the mountain. The people could not reach them until they offered them covenants and pledges. They came down, and they bound them with ropes, brought them to Makkah, and sold them to Quraysh. As for Khubayb, 'Uqbah ibn al-Harith bought him, partnered in his purchase by Abu Ihab ibn 'Aziz and others — 'Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl, al-Akhnas ibn Shunun, 'Ubaydah ibn Hakim, Umayyah ibn Abi 'Utbah, the sons of al-Hadrami, Sa'yah ibn 'Abdillah, and Safwan ibn Umayyah. They handed him to 'Uqbah ibn al-Harith, who imprisoned him in his house as long as Allah willed. A woman of the family of 'Uqbah used to open for him and feed him. He said to her, "When the people intend to kill me, inform me beforehand." When they intended to kill him, she informed him. He said, "Seek for me a razor to cleanse myself with," meaning to shave his pubic hair. The son of the woman who used to help him entered with the razor in his hand. He took the boy's hand and said, "Has Allah enabled you against us?" She said, "What is this I thought of you?" Then he handed her the razor and said, "I was only jesting." The partners who shared in him brought him out, the people of Makkah with them, with a wooden cross, until at al-Tan'im they erected it and crucified him upon it. The one who undertook his killing was 'Uqbah ibn al-Harith, in retaliation for al-Harith ibn 'Amir, who had been killed at Badr as a disbeliever. Khubayb said to them at his killing, "Release me from the bonds until I pray two rak'ahs." They released him. He prayed two light rak'ahs, then turned and said: > **"Were it not that you would think I feared death, I would have lengthened them, and for that I shortened them."** He said, "O Allah, I look only upon the face of an enemy. O Allah, I find no messenger to Your Messenger, so convey my greeting of peace to him." Jibril alayhi al-salam came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of that. Khubayb said as they raised him upon the wood: > **"O Allah, count them in number, kill them piecemeal, and leave none of them."** The sons of the polytheists killed at Badr killed Khubayb. When they put weapons into him while crucified, they called to him and adjured him, "Would you love that Muhammad were in your place?" He said: > **"No, by Allah the Mighty, I would not love that even a thorn prick his foot in my ransom."** They laughed. When they raised him to the wood Khubayb recited: "The confederates gathered around me and incited their tribes, assembling every assembly; they gathered their sons and women, and I was brought near to a long, fortified trunk; to Allah I complain of my estrangement then my anguish, and what the confederates prepared for me at my death-place; O Throne-Possessor, grant me patience for what is intended for me, for they have cut my flesh and my hope is gone; that is for the sake of Allah, and if He wills He blesses the joints of a torn corpse; by my life, I care not, when I die a Muslim, upon what side my resting-place for Allah is." As for Zayd ibn al-Dathinah, Safwan ibn Umayyah bought him and killed him for his father Umayyah ibn Khalaf; Nitas, freedman of Banu Jumah, killed him. Both were killed at al-Tan'im. 'Amr ibn Umayyah buried Khubayb. Hassan said concerning Khubayb: "Would that Khubayb's covenant had not betrayed him, would that Khubayb had known the people; the straps of Zuhayr ibn al-Agharr and Jami', who of old rode forbidden deeds; you granted protection, then when you granted it you betrayed, at the outskirts of al-Raji' you were defeatists."
